So Heikki Kovalainen is the best F1 driver out there because of that.
Ok now that we went on a side-track here so nicely...

Hamilton beat Kova in an F1 car.

Who has beaten Hamilton? ....

The one thing that became very clear during the Top Gear episode was that Vettel seems amicable and witty. In contrast, Hamilton was just his "self-assured" self.

Hamilton may or may not be a better driver but I prefer Vettel to win any day because he just a much nicer guy.

Hamilton reminds of Schumacher but without all his titles or wins, becomes more like him every day on a personal level, but less like him as a driver as time goes on.

Do you need to speak to someone in person to tell whether they are witty or self-assured? I don't think so. In fact most of the comedians that I find funny, I have never talked too, but they still make me laugh. I think calling Hamilton "self-assured" and Vettel witty are fair comments.

I understand where you are going, you base your opinion on what you see on tv, but is that really him? I mean he is there for promo and Red Bull doesnt want him swearing Clarckson to death(although the chance that happens will be really really small).

If I take a look at interviews they give and such promo things I must say Hamilton looks much more 'in place'. When I see Vettel getting interviewed he has a stance that says 'I am standing here cause I am forced to, if i wasnt forced i wouldnt be here'. Hamilton on hte other hand has a much more 'active' stance, he looks like he is enjoying himself and if he is not you will notice the same.

Sure Vettel is making jokes, but so does Hamilton. Hamilton more shows himself when in a promo vid then vettel who really just stands there, makes a few jokes and does what he is asked to. For example have you seen recent BBC coverage with the Jet Ski's? Hamilton really showed he was enjoying himself and was making jokes and such.

If Vettel is nicer or not, I dont know and I wont say who is. But on tv Hamilton really shows to be more open and more enjoying himself

Is any successful elite sportsman not "self assured"?

Self assurance is an euphemism for confidence and all top athletes suffer from a lack of it at some stage or other, some for longer periods than others...
Generally I don't care about what people say. I have to be clear with myself. When everything goes well, people celebrate you, when you make mistakes people criticize you.

Pretty much aggree, look at strikers in football.

Case Study, Andy Carrol ยฃ35m from Newcastle to Liverpool, same day Fernando Torres for ยฃ50m from Loverpool to Chelsea. Carrol came to Liverpool injured, spent 4 weeks getting back to fitness, Chelsea pretty much had a fit Torres. Torres spent the better part of almost Febuary and March till he got his fiorst Chelsea goal, Carrol when fit got his first goals in the first 2 games (i think).

Look at Paula Radcliffe the Marathon Runner, she can win any marathon set to her on a yearly basis, get her in a Olimpic event and she just fails to deliver, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 she pulls out of the first and the second she finished 32nd.

Take a look at the best example of a confedence sport, you can drive long and play with the ball with your irons all day long getting the ball to within 5-10ft of the pin all day, but if your having jitters with the putter, forget it as you will be 2 and 3 putting all day long. Where as the wee guy that isnt playing as well with the driver and his irons and wedges and placing his ball within 20ft all the time and is holing out on the putting green will beat you all day long.

Confedence is something that is confused with arrogance or flipancy sometimes, if you are winning it comes accross as arrogance, if you are losing it comes accross as flipancy. Either way you loose as people dislike both arrogance and flipancy.

Ive always liked Vettel, not always liked Hamilton. This season i have started to like Hamilton more, especially after Monaco. My dad on the other hand has always disliked Vettel, after Top gear he now has changed his outlook.

Then again i pretty much support most of the grid, however Ferrari and Alguersauri are my 2 main dislikes on the grid, but im not as Hate/Like as i once was, i try to give people a chance to prove themselvs to me first now, i usually base my opinions on a long term view now, i try to give at least one full season for a driver, or for a car or team, about 8 GP.

Theres no point of it in Motorsport, however in other spoers like Football, things are diffrent for me due to the city i live in. Your either one or the other. And there is enough hate in Rangers V Celtic matches for my entire year and more.

Motorsport, and in particular F1 is my release to enjoy sport for what it should be, not hatred for one team so virlant that bombs get sent to the oposing team. There is just no place in sport for hatred.

At the risk of going off topic (hell, everyone else has) did anyone else notice the clear bias in the director of photography's choices for the race in Valencia? It was Alonso then Algersuari, then Alonso etc.

Granted it was a dull race, but why focus so heavily on Algersuari? He wasn't doing anything spectacular IMHO.

Enjoyed watching Vettel on Top Gear though. I think they should do a day of only F1 drivers like they did when they replaced the car for "stars" before. That way, they could at least all drive on the same day. Granted the conditions may be changeable, but it would be closer than it is now.

I'd prefer a fleet of Ceeds so the drivers could do time trials on the same track at the same time. They could fit 3 cars on that track at 30 sec intervals, or perhaps 4 at 20 sec intervals.

They could also use an elimination process so the winner has had a head to head with 2 or 3 others on the same track at the same time in the same conditions.

Sorry guys. I know what I'm asking is unrelated to the topic. Who is next week's Top Gear guest? I've heard it's Rowan Atkinson, but is it true?

Do you really think Vettel makes constant british related jokes when he is actually being himself? That's just for us Brits. He probably turns around to his German friends and asks what the hell we all find so funny.

Who really cares how nice a guy a driver is? I mean, people are so fan-girly these days. Does anybody care how nice Nadal is? Did anybody care how nice Schumacher is? lol

Then again maybe it's just me..

So yeah, the one chance we compare Hamilton and Vettel in the same car, Vettel can only muster 0.7 seconds faster even though he was in the dry and Hamilton was in the slippery wet.
