It all started with a narrower track and grooved tyres, which led to those hideous front wheels. The lack of "mechanical" grip then gave an enormous focus on aerodynamic tweaks, which in turn resulted in all sorts of silly tack-ons to the cars body.
As for this latest folly, if the ability to run close without loosing front-end grip is the target, take a look at Champ-cars some ten years ago. Fantastic front-to- tail racing and overtaking at 200 mph+, without the cars looking like something out of a cartoon. Now how did they do that?
Yes, I remember that whole series of gorgeous John Barnard-inspired designs. And since you do, too, I am surprised you said in another thread that the FIA would do anything to ensure Ferrari wins . . . They certainly "allowed" Ferrari to lose for a long, long time!
