2009 Aero style - Ugly?

Post

I've just seen the new aero package from Williams and BMW. I donno the details of the rules but the 2009 cars look ugly. simple flat wings in front and TALL & NARROW wings on the rear.

no more aero components on the body. the appearance is like a simple toy car. I feel that even the F1 cars of 90s were better. The looks seems like such a big step backwards. It does not look futuristic or space age. It feels so so... NORMAL.

Being a pinnacle of motorsport, is this what F1 wants? the best drivers driving a simple looking car with KERS.

What do you guys think?

There ugly, but I'll get used to them after a couple of races or seasons. I think it makes way for more overtaking.

Just as we've grown used to narrow track and grooved tyres, we may come to love this ugly duckling.

It helps to understand the reasoning behind the spec, and the brains trust that came up with it kind of know what they're doing - see http://www.grandprix.com/ft/ft20831.html for some background.

that is quite a story. So now there is an adjustable front wing?
Oh well, ugly duckling it is then. As long as Ferrari overtakes and wins, that will put a smile back on my face.

Change is a good thing, else we stagnate and cease moving forward. But I have to admit, it's a radically different visual package this time around. Most will get used to it.
But I'll withold any final judgement until I see if this new package produces what it promises... "closer" racing, and more opportunities to pass.
Racing should be decided on the track, not the court room.

It wouldnt allow more passing as drivers block the action, same as before, it wouldnt change anything as drivers will block their passes.

There were a thousand ways to allow closer racing(more flow to the diffuser etc.) but what do they do? They take aprogimately 50% of the downforce while they also could do it in a more elegant way.

Agreed the cars do look ugly at the moment.

Both the front and the rear wings look wrong, one too wide and one too small. However, these cars are 2008 mules adapted for 2009 spec, so are all a compromise and as others have said when there is a change all the new cars look ugly (different) to start with until after the first few races and then we all get use to them

The rear wing is not too bad for me, but that front wing is horrid. In fact, think about how many cars will lose theirs in the first corners of each race. I guess everyone will try to get a top spot now.

All I have to say is:

2009 body/slicks/gearbox + 2004 engine/wings/diffusor = best formula ever!

Man, I hope the rFactor modders pick up on this combo! It would be hard to beat!

Isn't that the entire point?

I think it's safe to say that while F1 TEAMS are the pinnacle of motor racing, the cars the FIA has forced them to build are not.

Luckily both Max and Bernie are old and will be dead soon.
