I suspect they (the drivers) would try both and find out that one was faster thus eliminating the use of the other one, even for over-taking as it'd be "green" and have very little grip available to them.
The drivers aren't in Favour of the proposal, this is Buttons view: "I suppose if you are the only person who knows about [the shortcut] then it is a great idea," Button said.

"We struggle seeing anyway out of the sides of the cars, because the cockpit comes up to here for safety reasons. So if there is a car coming at an angle, it can be very dangerous.
"It could be done manually. It would take quite a while, but it could be done. There is however a much more efficient and accurate way of getting the data. Men with lasers." Wing Commander Andy Green

when I raced MX we would have option lanes now and then. Some were a different arrangement of jumps or dual berms through the corners. Depending on the class they did help you get around slow people.Image
The NEMX track features just about every obstacle you'd face in an AX, along with a lane that offers two different options: whoops or double-double.

This sounds a bit like my plans for football (that I can't stand!) - the players need more draconian incentives like gladiator fights; win or die, and anything goes. Playing for over an hour (?) and all they score is one or two goals?!!
Maybe Bernie's next plan is for xbox live connections to the cars so you can interactively take over various controls. I think this was tried out when Massa was out of action judging by what was happening to the second ferrari...
I am an engineer, not a conceptualist :)

Somewhere in this very big world is a very small man with very grey hair. And he's laughing his withered arse off at the F1 community seriously discussing his prank.

By definition no path will be faster than the other if the two paths are on the main straight. If one path is faster, then the lead car is always welcome to take it. But a faster car being held up behind would never opt to take the same path.

As far as Button's comment, does he not remember pit lane exits? Any issue regarding merging can be resolved with a can of white paint.

Why is this idea being ridiculed? Do people LIKE seeing a faster car held up for entire stints with no possible attempt at passing? Arent 10 years of essentially 180mph parades and passing in the pits enough?
