I believe that all 4 tyres have to be the same compound

Is each tyre symmetrical left to right? Can you really reverse them on the rims? That is, put the side with the writing on it to face the the car?

Last time we discussed it here, no you can't, directional really means that, where the whole thing is intended to have an inner and outer side.

that can't be so ..they have fronts and rears , not left fronts and right fronts etc

so the tyre can be mounted as left side or right side by reversing it
with patterned tyres you could have them assymetric ie only fittable in one position on the car presuming they are designed to rotate in only one direction

I believe the tyres are left or right side only, as I remember Kovalainen having huge understeer when McLaren put the tyres on the wrong sides. They then put on loads of front wing only for this to overload the front tyre to be overloaded and to burst.
