starting on the same tyres

Post

is this literal ? do they have to use the same set of tyres that they used to set their qualify time on ?

or does it just mean they have to use the same specification ?

notice the inferences ; suppose you need 2 sets of one spec for the race , will that leave enough of that spec for qualifying /practise??

eg suppose your optimum race /qually strategy is soft/hard /soft , that means 3 sets of soft for final qaully and race ...hence only 2 sets of soft for the rest of practise Q1 , Q2 ...is this enough ?

in other words , will the teams be able to optimise their tyre selection ?

I don't think so, i thought it was like the top 10 starts on the same tires wichs they had driven on in Q3. And maybe you can change the Toe/Camber/Caster. But i don't think you may use all new tires.
What does IDK means?? (someone) i dont know (other dude) OMG no one knows

Tyre change has never been a problem in parc ferme. They pre heat the tyres also. So it would not make sense to use the identical set. It should apply to the same spec.

IIRC it's the same set used for the best Q3 time, literally.

Yup same set from Q3. This is what the teams were exercising in Testing.

are they forced to use the same set of tires for all Q3? What if they use two different specs or two sets of the same spec? Then which one should they start with?

From the regulations:
25.4 d) At the start of the race each car which took part in Q3 must be fitted with the tyres with which the driver set his grid time.

thanks firbanks , knew it must be there in the regs somewhere

now I have 2 goes in Q3 , using two different spec tyres
I set identical times ; can I choose ? [ could happen , so rules should cover this ! ]
or ~I use two sets , same spec ,same question , which set ?

Historically, identical times would be placed on the grid in the order they were set: the dirst driver to set the time would be placed in front of the second driver to set the same time.

I would assume that a driver setting two identical times on different tyres would have the same process applied and the first set of tyres would be the "qualified tyre".

Could they switch them between left and right? Would they even fit?

I guess the purpose would be to save the tires. Suppose the FL is exposed to more load, and therefore is more damaged than FR after the qualifying session... So just swap them around, and they will be equally worn as the race progresses.

Sadly, this solution is impossible, as the tires are directional.

not impossible , you just reverse them on the rims

I think he's alluding to camber too and how the tyres would be unevenly worn (even on individual tyres)
