Did anyone hear Max on the radio complaining about "engine braking", I assume he was talking about the energy recovery?
From memory it's not the first time I heard him complaining about it, last race weekend he was saying the same.
Why is it something they can't resolve for him?
Driving style related?
Thank you really doesn't really describe enough what I feel. - Vettel

Chandhok on the skypad broke the LEC lap down pretty well I think vs HAM. It looked to me like there’s some laptime still to come from the chasing pack. A combination of gain up the hill, laziness through the corners and leaving a good gap to the barriers.
I agree, but if they cant bring their tyres to 100%, Ferrari is looking good for quali. They might even have a little bit more pace in hand than what they did today.
They pretty surely have more pace in hand. The question is which team has more. Traditions say Mercedes, but how much more will be clear come Saturday.

Almost 3 and a half hours after the session and the FIA still hasn't posted the P2 lap time document. The FIA seems to be slow at everything!

Why is anyone suprised Ferrari are good here. If everything goes to plan Leclerc will steamroll the weekend. Had placed decent wager already on pole and win, shame about 1st practice as I had put money on him to be P1.

From AMuS:

“The GPS analyzes suggest that Ferrari and Red Bull were on the road with a little more power than Mercedes, but even if you deduct that, Ferrari is a real candidate for victory. Between Red Bull and Mercedes it's all about hundredths and thousandths again. The vehicle set-up set the tone. While the Red Bull drivers and Valtteri Bottas complained about excessive understeer, Lewis Hamilton was halfway satisfied with his car.”

Ferrari may come in out of nowhere and spoil Red Bull's day if they cannot get on top of the setup issues that Max was suffering.

We have to wait a whole extra day to find out. :|

They tune the Power unit for each track. Honda had a very different engine two years ago so they have much more tuning to do.

Hamilton will have a shot at pole, and he may be in that shootout with LEC.

And Verstappen if they rectify those setup issues.

Lewis seemed pretty cheery today, and I’ve seen the straight line speed deltas from practice and Merc were turned way down.

It is amazing how people repeatedly get deceived with the Mercedes BS of "oh we are slower!"
"Sebastian there's very, you're a member of a very select few.. Stewart, Lauda, Piquet, Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Fangio.. VETTEL!"

what exactly is a good analysis anyway? look at what happened to the collective understanding of the world about the impact of 2021 floor changes to low rake and high rake cars.

same exact car from 1st race, with some minor tweaks, is continuing to lead the field in these races so far. toto says, they are not going to bring any upgrades, except minor optimizations and i am willing to bet, they will win majority of the races for the rest of the year, with "minor optimizations", while red bull can pile on upgrades. that's how good w12 is.

Ferrari looked strong on S3 in Catalunya. Even last years Ferrari was very good in slow-speed corners. I'm not surprised they're looking good in Monaco, seeing how nimble that Ferrari looks, It's gonna be exciting.

Would there be a reason that Merc and Red Bull haven’t gone for it today?

There isn’t a huge amount of time to get it right here in Monaco with the shorter practice sessions and we know track position is king.
No need to risk the car, as the sim guys back at home base will be going non stop for the next 40 hours or so. Also for Saturday, the temperature is going to drop 5°C, and cloud cover will be almost 100% dropping the track temperature significantly.

Edit: Max did look on the ragged edge a few times, but that was mostly down to the balance issue he had.
Lower temps should work even more in Ferrari and RB's hands. Merc always seems a bit off pace-wise in qualy compared to race trim, which points to that. Same goes with their lower rear deg.
