They called Max off 2/3rds of the way through Sector 2. He was going into the 1.11s.
Easily. And it was a yellow S1 too.
he had the purple, might have been 0.001s off and would be yellow

Interesting grid... it was hard getting tires on the window today so the grid is all over the place.
Hard for everyone but a guy named Max, probably some 2/3 tenths in that car still.

Good job Sainz.
Alonso kinda blew it in his first outing with that big excursion, that car probably missing a good chunk of downforce.

Wow, this was a super tough qualy. Max had such confidence in his (fantastic) car, Perez clearly had none. Very good from Lando, ofc also Sainz. Hamilton to the second row as Gasly will get a penalty for sure. Maybe 2. Alo had a broken floor due to Q1 excursion.

If the RBR picked up 50kg, this would be the best season ever...🤣
Funny you should say that, I was listening to The Missed Apex Patreon pod earlier today and one of them said that the best penalty for a budget cap breach would be weight….

I heartily recommend the MA podcasts in both free-to-air and patron only variants. “They may be wrong, but they’re first”.

The issue with Missed Apex is the extent by which they are wrong far exceeds the benefit from being first.

I'd say a 12.0 was where he was going to land.

We don't know if he would have flattened out the final corner.

Top speeds (km/h)f cars from their fastest laps

RB/Alpine - 330
Ferrari - 329
Merc - 324
Amr - 323
McLaren - 320

Could be tricky for lando to hold on unless he can fly through the last two corners where his car is fortunately also very fast. Amr and Merc might struggle to make it past other cars on track even with the circuit changes

Interesting Qualifying

- That was only a banker lap from Max! So probably 0,3-0,5 still in it…
-Mclaren and Alpine gained a lot of performance (low temperatures helping maybe??)
-Leclerc, Russell and Perez absolutely nowhere for some reason (probably tire temps)
-Hamilton should have been P2 had he not messed T10 exit
-Alonso will be racing like a lion tomorrow 😂 (podium can be achieved since AM is very good on its tires)

This is the best circuit to showcase a car’s performance! Apart from RB all other teams are converging in lap time…the whole field is so bunched up! This is great really and shows the rules are truly working as expected! A shame RB is so far ahead of everyone though…

Congratulations to Max. What a car. We’ve now seen the underfloor and know that nobody is catching this car till heavy reg changes. RB have already mastered 3D flow structures in their underfloor while everyone else looks to be using rudimentary math. Nobody’s catching them for a while. Hard dose of reality for everyone.

Perez has lost the plot. What an opportunity he is squandering. Sad to see. The car just seems over his head — more than he can handle. Sad.

What a showing from Macca and Norris. Could not be happier for the team. Front of second row. Absolutely outstanding, well deserved, and refreshing. Congrats to all the Macca fans. It’s gotta feel good.

I think Shaal had a broken car or something. Clearly something was wrong with his chassis.

Shame Fred lost it early in quali and broke the car. Don’t think anybody was going to touch Max today, but would have been nice to see Fred mixing it up with the top 5 first lap.

No idea what happened between Lewis and George. That was really, really odd. Did Lewis start too close to George, or was George not going to run/give a tow to Ham, and changed his mind, or...? Just really odd there. George never was able to get the car turned on but Lewis didn’t have that problem. Looks like Lewis was running full beans in Q2 whereas others turned it up more. Lewis only found a tenth between Q2 and Q3. Were Merc not going to run different set ups? If so, it’s clear which one works and which doesn’t.

Great to see teams are upgrading so well. Great to see a tightened up grid. Great to see Norris in a competitive car this race. Looking forward to seeing how he does especially, and how the team does on strategy and pit stops. Macca have a real opportunity here with how badly Fred and Shal and Checo qualified.

Russell appeared slow through 12. I think Hamilton thought he was dawdling to then give him a tow in the main straight. In reality George was just grousing in the radio and not checking him mirrors.

Russell really should receive an impeding or avoidable collision penalty.

2 separate 3 place penalties for Gasly, his engineer should be proud.

I can’t remember the last time a penalty was dished out when teammates were involved in an incident

no penalty points, apparently? Gasly was sitting at 8, so 2x2 more would mean a race ban.
