Vodafone McLaren MP4-27 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Luckily the front wing end plate and floor are parallel.
Thank you Owen :) the differences in angles, eleveation of the cars, part of the corner etc will have negligible effects on the relative angles of the wing and floor.

Also, Do Mclaren run a stiff front and soft rear? It seems that other teams run a soft front and stiff rear to keep their desired rake. Just my two cents there though :)

Another question, does the plane of the front wing have to be parallel to the floor?
The box that confines it's dimensions is so it may just be the end plate is designed within that. I'm not sure of any rule that deems it illegal if it isn't though.

Is Macca going to run out if development space with its low chassis later in the year while the higher chassis cars continue to have options? It seems Gary in that article above seems to hint at that...? Are they in trouble come late Aug?

Possibly, but with many teams and analysts commenting on aero being less important than tyres, it may not have too much of an effect.

Tbh, I'd agree with them.

The "technically" least aero efficient car (at least at the front of the pack) won the first GP of the year and has been the most consistent qualifier of 2012.

Aero efficiency is still as important. It's a major part of the equation to get the tyres working.
A good car that can't get the tyres working would be even worse if the aero was not as developed.
Caterham and HRT are perfect examples of crappy cars gaining nothing of the tyre lotttery.
For Sure!!

The team to consistently get on top of the tyres will win the titles. It's a lottery at the moment and the tyres appear to have such a narrow window of optimum performance that any change in track temp can be disastrous.

I expect to see gadgets appear that allow for making small changes to setup to work tyres better during races to keep them in near optimum performance for the race.

Get on top of the tyres then you can exploit all your aero brilliance. Given the whole field are struggling it's a good bet that it is far from easy! :)

I think it's impossible to make a higher chassis, isn't it?

Not impossible but most probably impractical and infeasible for a mid-season update.

with a higher chassis they would also need to completely rework the front suspension

The chassis is fine. It's not that much lower compared to high chassis as the low nose when compared to high noses. It may only be a cm or two lower than others.

Perhaps bringing both versions again?
I thought low nose was a given around here.

Because of Button's problems in Spain
