Vodafone McLaren MP4-27 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I don't think its so much the upgrades, although there certainly doesn't appear to of been many, the car is flawed, it just took the others longer to figure out the problems but now they have you see the pace, sure there will be the odd race like like canada where they'll be very competitive but not consistently like RBR for example.
Either way can't see them going for the higher chassis with step nose otherwise they would of introduced it by now. Only upgrade that will benefit them is the adjustable brake temperature parts only if the figure out the tyres first.

Totally agree....They had developed their car better than the competition before the season began. Now, the fundamentally sound cars are coming to the fore. I hope someone can help me with this...I have been thinking that high mount front wishbones actually help push the car into the turn when it's loaded....thereby reducing the work of outside rear tire and diff. The mp4-27 almost horizontal wishbone doesn't work the front tire that hard but in turn relies on diff settings and other things to complement it. But crutially no one is burning front tires...it's always the rears...someone educate me on this.

The last ten pages of this thread will clue you up.
Became a McLaren fan in the late 70's when I ended up laminating their Kevlar nosecones.

Is the McLaren very bad on low fuel?? In Valencia the last part of the race the pace just dropped very fast out of Lewis car. And again today at Silverstone.

I dont agree that the car dosnt look good at all. It does have some speed in it. Hamilton proves this in allmost every pratice and quali.

Nothing to do with low fuel, just it eats its tyres, and McLaren pulled him into the pits too early for his last stop. He did 22 laps on the first stint, was out of tyres, and was then pulled in with 23 still to go, knowing he'd come out in traffic and screw them up a bit.

Grosjean pit stop : lap 26 and Hamilton lap 28

Lotus has speed and Mc Laren not at all.

We've no idea what the setup was on the car and the performance could've been due to a compromise wet/dry setup. Looking at the forecast it would've been the way to go but the British weather played a joker by being sunny.

Even Massa was racy compared to Hamilton and I can't believe the Ferrari has made that big a step.

And that means what ? Nothing, anyone can be quick in practice, who cares about that, its the race and only the race that counts.
