Do the FiA need to improve mirror and forward visibility standards?

Do not touch it, the rules are strict enough

Re: Visibility in F1 cars

You know what, after reviewing footage from the driver's perspective, I don't see the issue.
- mirrors seem great at speed,
- vision out the front is fine.

These guys lately are just looking for excuses rather than accepting blame themselves.

As for lateral vision, I don't believe their peripheral vision is significantly impacted by car design. If anything, it's helmet design, but for obvious safety pre-requisites, this won't ever be changed.

Fil - we can judge the mirrors from that shot; yes. But we need to remember that that will probably be just above the eyes (where can you mount the camera, if not?)

Excellent footage there. It's obvious now that Vettel was lying out his backside about not seeing Button, and Hammi is full of it too.
Looks like these guys were protecting their ego more than track position.

All is great on smooth tyres but all will change if you get the slightest flat spot...

the Pirelli camera might be a bit high ...or has di Grassi only eyes for the rear tyres when on track checking his mirrors?
As there were other cars on track at the same time I doubt he would adjust both mirrors that way .
I feel the second video is much more realistic ,but to me that is not the point here .Hamiltons on track dramas have nothing to do with rear view mirrors.
When a second car is near you at full song no doubt you will FEEL the presence -this is a s loud as your own mount and frequencies are close so there are interferences ,at least in terms of aero .
It´s not like Hamilton is in F1 since 4weeks but suddenly he has a problem realising he is not alone on the track? He has that uncompromising style long time .Last year only webber gave him stick on these occasions but now it seems a lot of people feel the urge of making a point and not giving in.

I remember seeing the Coulthard camera positioning. It was right at the bottom of the visor by the mouth. Thats why it is so low. I the the Di Grassi one looks spot on and explains why they claim its the first ever mounted at eye level.

Either way the mirrors look rock solid on both!

That's a nice footage! In that vid it really looks like what you see in games as F1 2010, and I think developers of the game took their time to ensure firld of view is correct.

Actually; Anthony Davidson; who is in charge of the "driver experience" portion of the game says that the game is set to be a bit higher than reality; for the better visibility; so that the game can be more fun (rather than struggling to sight apexes etc)

Dare I say it, as a driving instructor.... yawn yawn.
MSM is ingrained into my pupils. Yes I know these guys are in a million leagues above my pupils but the principal is exactly the same (ok... without the signal bit)

That TF110 mirror supports looks way more thicker and stronger than on a current F1 car.

The video of Lucas Di Grassi is at eye level. The descripton from the video:
Join in an installation lap around Barcelona with Lucas di Grassi - first time ever eye-level camera real driver point of view.

Yes, it is new visor reinforcement — a Zylon strip covered with carbonfibre.
It was in use on one brand of helmets since the start of the year and became obligatory on all since Japanese GP.
Interesting to note that it weighs an extra 60 gms and actually reduces the drivers view.

What is it actually for? What eventuality are they avoiding with this; that they didn't earlier on?

It's basically to reinforce the visor in case of an impact....Reducing the visor gap I suppose....
