I bet it has more to do with the Total sponsorship than his ROC showing.

Grosjean confirmed at Lotus for 2013 season

Romain Grosjean has been confirmed at Lotus for the 2013 Formula 1 campaign, extending his contract with the Enstone-based squad after making his return to the sport this year. The Frenchman, whose outright speed was overshadowed by first lap incidents and a one-race ban, continues alongside Kimi Räikkönen.

Grosjean made his F1 comeback with Lotus this season, having endured a difficult seven-race spell with the team formerly known as Renault back in 2009. Following on from his title-winning year in feeder category GP2, he started the campaign well by qualifying third for the Australian Grand Prix, before securing podium finishes in Bahrain, Canada and Hungary and seven further top ten results.

However, a series of accidents put his seat at risk as the season developed, with his involvement in the dramatic first corner crash at Spa-Francorchamps leaving him banned for the Italian Grand Prix. Despite this, his underlying pace has prompted Team Principal Eric Boullier to retain his fellow countryman for another term.

"It's fantastic for me to be continuing with Lotus F1 Team for 2013," Grosjean explained. "It's superb to have the support of everyone at Enstone. I'm really looking forward to rewarding their faith when we take to the track in Australia.

"I learnt a lot in my first full season in Formula 1 and my aim is to put these lessons into practice with stronger and more consistent performance on track next year. There are a lot of exciting developments occurring behind the scenes at Enstone and I am very excited with the prospect of the E21.

"I've already had my seat fitting and spoken with all the personnel involved with the build of the new car; I just can't wait to get behind the wheel."

Grosjean won the individual Race of Champions title in Thailand last weekend, outracing the likes of Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher and Tom Kristensen.

It is a good decision. I think if Romain can sort out his weak points, Lotus could have one of the strongest and most consistant couple of drivers on the grid. It is a good balance between experience and a fast semi-rookie who is in a learning curve.

Good decision to retain Romain.

I expect him to once again beat Kimi in qualis, and I hope he won't make any silly mistakes next season.

I think they should have signed Kobayashi.

I agree.

But perhaps there are some clauses as to Grosjeans performances next year...if he falls below a certain level I can see the call going out for Koba.

What would Koba bring to the team?

Sure, he's likeable and a joy to watch.

But he isn't fast and he isn't constistent.

GrosJean is funded by French fuel giant Total and that's the only reason he is retained. Lotus is desperate for money.

One would hope so but what would those be? Win a Race qualify near the top 3 and finish top 5-?? Is that was lotus can expect form their car drivers?? And Koboyashi in a Lotus would have been cool..

IMO if Grosjean can dial out the mistakes, he's a far far superior driver to Koba

You could level that to Sergio Perez too, and yet he will be driving a McLaren next year.

I think Kobayashi is a fast driver. And i think he has showed it many times. Perhaps he is not the most consistent but is Grosjean?? All Grosjean is is a crash dummy. He is fast enough but a danger to every one on the track. He should find himself a motorsport where noone elese is on track at the same time. Like rallying.

Yeah, and Whitmarsh is already explaining himslef as if this move was a mistake, and even pointing out that was more of a political move (new market for McLaren cars)

Yup, that's what I was saying. Money is the driver for over half of the drives on the grid.

If Koba is so talented why nobody want him in a team :wtf:

Lotus has new sponsors like Burns (12/15 millions) and now Honeywell to be confirmed (> 20 millions). Total is a private sponsor for Grosjean and Lotus (10 millions)
