Vodafone McLaren MP4-27 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

That could well be true, yes.

Why have they placed the hole 90 degrees from the airflow? And extended it outwards?

Looks like something else to be honest.

As if they have let part of the flap remain in the original position. Probably due to the gills.

By gills, do you mean the endplate slats, or the loophole teams are exploiting to create a slot gap in the wing planes?

Slats,

They move inwards so you would not be able to have a full DRS flap according to the picture.

Gills should be a somewhat correct word though,

Yeah, just that generally gills are referring to the cuts for cooling in the engine cover.

The teams use the outer 10mm or (15mm?) designated for the end-plate to make a wing profile. It's a loop-hole that gives designers a chance to make the Rear wings wider than 750mm. See end-plate wing profiles on the Ferrari and the RedBull.

That's a loophole that had passed me by, cheers n smikle!

Does anybody have any ideas as to the sudden plummet in top speed over the last couple if races? I worry that in India with its many straights, mainly the one between turns 3 & 4, McLaren will be mugged for positions all day with or without DRS. Is it a setup thing opting for more downforce, an engine/gearbox protection thing? We all saw their new 'Parachute Deployment' development on the side of Lewis' car in Korea, maybe it's to do with that

What is the appendage off the front of the centre the beam wing that looks suspiciously like a carbon fibre pipe? Almost certainly nothing but one can hope! Also new RW livery (is that the 4th or 5th one this season now?!).
