I agree.

There is zero chance of beating the orange cars with more downforce.

Car number 1 is also going to be a nuisance.

every other lap was fast, those in between not at all

Seems like they went a bit further towards low downforce in FP2 (apparently trimming the wings) but maybe that was either too much or too early (ie the track will grip up and come towards that setup). As Charles says, a fast but tricky car is better than the other way around as they can make it more consistent overnight.
