Rhino 3d to Solidworks

Post

Hi, im wondering if someone here can help me out. Im doing a project and have had a few parts made in rhino 3d. Unfortunately i need to use Solidworks for the rest of it, but im unable to convert the files using my computer (too slow, crashes every time)

Is there anyone on here with a powerful machine willing to convert the files for me?

Thanks

How are you doing it? Have you tried saving to Rhino file to IGES?

I can help you as long as I don't need Rhino.

It's been a while, but if i recall correctly Caito is right in the IGES option, and shouldn't be computation intensive i think. However i seem to recall trimmed surfaces were an issue.
The other thing to mention is that the whole thing depends on what you are going to do with it in solidworks, will polys suffice and how detailed? how complex is your 3dm?

Sorry took a while to reply, I dont have the rhino software anymore so i cant save them as other file types, they're currently saved as 3ds files. I tried using the solidworks feature that allows you to import different file types but the computer freezes. Theyre fairly detailed parts

My best try would be to save it as IGES, try to get someone with Rhino, maybe someone here has it. I don't, sorry.

Ok so I got a trial version of Rhino which will let me save 25 times :)
I opened the biggest of the parts and went to save_as and saved it as a IGES file, during which it asked me what type, so I picked 'solidworks solid'. Then I got a message saying that solidworks doesnt support polygon meshes (or something to that extent). I tried again choosing 'solidworks surface' and even just 'default' but got the same each time. I now have 22 saves left... :/
Am I doing something wrong?

AFAIK IGES will only export NURBS, if you want to export meshes you probably can do so using dxf or similar poly formats.

3DM Import for SolidWorks is a Rhinoceros (.3dm) file import add-in for SolidWorks®. This add-in gives SolidWorks the ability to import geometric data from 3DM files. 3DM Import for SolidWorks reads polygon mesh and curve data stored in 3DM files and imports it into SolidWorks. 3DM Import for SolidWorks is very easy to use as it adds new commands to SolidWorks. It also adds a submenu to the SolidWorks menu called "3DMImport".

Wow, what kind of box you running?
Seems that it would have to be quite limited not to open up a file - unless its absolutely huge!?

If you'd like I'll try it here at work.
Just got BOXX computers...
