Mark Webber overtake of Alonso

Post

Good to see that Webber enjoyed that over take. HOW THE HELL COULD HE NOT HAVE. It was truly amazing.

"One pass was particularly enjoyable - when I got Fernando Alonso's Ferrari around the outside going into Eau Rouge".

"Going down the straight, I thought: "The tow is working pretty well. I've got a bit of over-speed. It's going to be nip-and-tuck at the bottom but I'll just have a look." And when I got to the bottom I was committed to making the move work"

Could you please put quotation marks around Webber's words to make it less confusing? Thanks in advance.

And wasn't that maneuver when Alonso had just exited the pits on cold tyres?

Reguardless if it was cold tyres or not is was still stunning to watch that from the drivers view that I got to see of BBC 1. It was that fraction of a second when you see that and it makes you aware that a lot of these drivers have great resprct for each other and will enter into a move like that with the knowleddge and skill not to get either party hurt.

Shouldn't this better be situated in the Spa race thread?

Webber on stunning Alonso overtake
Yeah, but you gotta say if Alonso hadnt made room for him it would have ben ugly and everyone would be calling him a dick for trying such a stupid move.
Theres plenty of passing spots at Spa without trying such a dangerous move as that especially when he would have DRS at the top of the hill.

That is I suppose where these guy's know how much respect they have for each other to pull a move like that.

Actually someone reminded me that in 2007, there was a mirror image situation of side-by-side entry into Eau Rouge between Lewis and Fernando. Fernando again was on the right, and Lewis on the left, but that time Fernando got the better of him. Or some such story.

Personally i would not have done what webber did.

Why? Well first of all from La source to Les Combes it´s a VERY long road.
To get the absolute maximum speed you can´t go two-wide in Eau Rouge.

If i was in his position i would have tapped the brakes, sneaked in behind Alonso then use DRS plus his tow to get away.
Reason is because you loose time to everyone else.

But still, impressive... umm forgot the word lol. I guess "stubborn" is the closest word i can come up with.
Basically he let Alonso know that he wasn´t gonna budge one bit.
I like that :)

I would probably call it trust more then respect.
Alonso doesn´t want to end the race there and he had no choice but to budge there.
Unless he wanted to see Webber open up Webber Airlines again :)

No team but i do feel i have some racecraft picked up over the years.
Never competed competitively though except for in iRacing.
I guess that is what keeps me from not loosing my mind as i feel racetracks is my home.

But what i said above is true, Webber would agree but when your in a race you often just attack and only think about the overtake if it went bad :)

Quite a few on youtube.

HampusA,

Just kidding.
However agree, it's a sport - you see the chance, you are going for it. You may not have another one.
And, if I look at the weekend is Spa, seems like Red Bull did not have so much confidence and they were trying to use (almost) every opportunity.

Yeah, except wasn't that shortly after Alonso tried to run Lewis off the road??

The passing maneuver offered several advantages though: Alonso had to back off losing valuable time in Eau-Rouge so he could not repass on the way up the hill.

Secondly, Alonso came out of the pits right? Therefore I'm not sure if Webber would have had DRS available (Can't remember where the detection point is)

Lastly, he would have had to back off quite a lot in order to get the best advantage from the slipstream, a maneuver that might lead to an unsuccessful passing move.

You're right though, in iRacing I wouldn't have done it either....either a crash or at least points for an incident would have been the result :p
