Would a more logical solution not be to allow the activation point to actually be the detection point itself? For example; Driver A is chasing Driver B. When Driver B crosses the DRS line; then whoever crosses the same line within 1 second would be able to open their DRS in that zone.
Would that not make more sense?
The problem with doing this is latency – you need time for the data to get back to the FIA's computer, it to check the timings, and then to send back the data saying to activate DRS to the car.
While at the moment, the stewards don't seem to care, it *is* in the rules that you can't use your DRS if you're already past someone...
F1 technical regs wrote:3.18.2 The adjustable bodywork may be activated by the driver at any time prior to the start of the race and, for the sole purpose of improving overtaking opportunities during the race, after the driver has completed a minimum of two laps after the race start or following a safety car period.
You're only allowed to activate it if it improves an overtaking opportunity.
