Hamilton & Alonso getting along?

Post

So Alonso apparently said about Hamilton "he's the only one who can win the championship in not the best car", when Hamilton heard this, he apparently responded with "it's lovely to hear that because I've always said he's the best driver here".

Are we seeing them genuinely making up, or are we seeing them both with a new rival to downtalk?

Please don't fill this thread with bile towards either driver, lets have some sane discussion, not fanishness.

I thought he said win a race, rather than a championship. I think possibly part of it would be mind games - kind of indirectly saying to Vettel "you're not the best, mate. You've just got the fastest car."

I think probably the two of them have always had quite a bit of respect towards each other and each other's skills/abilities; even in their 2007 year. Even if you don't like someone, doesn't mean you have to say they "suck"

"the enemy of my enemy is my friend" might apply here.

I never thought Alonso and Hamilton really hated each other the same way Prost and Senna did. The media tried very hard to blow it out of proportion because they love stories like that. Like someone else said, there is a respect there, and the rivalry is less relevant this year because neither have really been in with a championship shout.

Common enemy; Vettel will unite all.

Alonso, Hamilton, Button, Schumacher and Rosberg will all unite to try and beat the common enemy.

The only real feud on track is car 3 and car 6 i think.

I don't think it is psychological warfare on Vettel. Alonso is too smart to underestimate Vettel's intelligence, the latter being able to see through such a superficial ploy. Plus Alonso said this about Vettel:
"I don't understand the criticisms about him, that he is not a real racer," He is a great champion about to win his second title and has remarkable qualities; a lot of speed. Yes he has the best car that gets a good place on the grid, but you need to be able to get the most out of it at every race and Sebastian does that very well. Even in difficult moments or when he makes a mistake, he is always fighting for the win. It is proof of his great qualities."
I bet that comment (first post) was from a question directed at Fred from a UK Journalist. Just as the one I posted was in reply to a question from a German journalist
I think that after 2007 things slowly started to mend, and after Lewis won his WDC it became ancient history for both of them. I suspect they get on quite well. At least as well as two competitors recognized as elite in their competition will, regardless of the way tabloids want to spin their animosity. JMHO

It's plain to see Hamilton and Alonso are the best drivers on track ability and talnet wise.
They really stand out the way how they drive the car. I like to call it beast mode.

I agree with them thinking that they are the real McCoys. Vettel doesn't have to do with it. To them Vettel is a distraction. Alonso really wants ferarri and mclaren to make the best car so he can kick Hamiltons ass. And Hamilton thinks the same thing.

lol, yeah, beat LH's ass and be the first, of all the losers, i.e. 2nd place.

I don't think we should read too much into what they said.

Always goes like this: they now have a common enemy so they are friends. As soon as they start getting into competition with each other over victories, the getting along will quickly be over. It's all so obvious and staged.
"There is a credit card with the Ferrari logo, issued by Santander, which gives the scuderia a % of purchases made with the card...

I would guess that such a serious amount of money would allow them to ignore the constant complains of a car that was nowhere near as bad as their #1 driver tried to sell throughout the season.

Heck, a car on which Massa finishes in the podium or has to lift so that his teammate finishes ahead (As we saw often in the final races of the year) is, by no means, a "bad" car."

I agree with Ringo. If Ferrari,Mclaren, and Red Bull made equal cars, Vettel would be third at best.

I never thought Alonso and Hamilton really hated each other the same way Prost and Senna did. The media tried very hard to blow it out of proportion because they love stories like that. Like someone else said, there is a respect there, and the rivalry is less relevant this year because neither have really been in with a championship shout.
+1 Alonso's problem was always with Dennis etc. whom he felt didn't honor their agreement. Hamilton v Alonso was just a convenient story for the media.

is this the first hint that Lewis will be in Ferrari in 2013? "no wonder" the "2nd driver" was upset......

Yup, agreed. If i remember correctly comments in a similar vein to these have been coming from Alonso AND Hamilton since 2008, so this latest comment is no real surprise to me. The media (and certain groups of fans, it has to be said) like to play up these 'rivalries' to fit whatever vendetta they have going on at the time, which i find somewhat sad.

It was nice to see Hamilton and Alonso greet each other with smiles and a hug before going onto the podium in Abu Dhabi

After the race Whitmarsh admired Alonso as a "fearsome competitor".

Good to see some camaraderie after the acrimony of the Moseley/Dennis/Todt years.

Good also that Alonso made Hamilton work for his win.

Could we see these 2 giants paired together again one day?
More could have been done.
