First Test's Viability

Post

So... It's currently snowing in Barcelona, it's expected to stay below 0 for the next 2 days, and then barely rise above zero for the next few after that. Are we looking at a cancelled first test due to snow and/or ice?

First test is in Jerez isn't it?

Still cold there, but at least above 10°C. Forecast is between 10 and 15 for the next few days.
So maybe less relevant than usually, but they won't have to cancel it due to snow.

The general opinion here was, that the teams would use the first days of testing to gain data on the new Pirellis and compare to the data they collected at last years Young Driver Test with the old cars without EBD.

So you still have a point. Comparing data from Abu Dhabi and data from a really cold Jerez track is probably less than ideal.
But as it is the same for everyone it doesn't matter that much. Maybe it neglects Mercedes' disadvantage of not having the W03 at the first test a tiny little bit.

to the optimist a glass is half full ; to the pessimist a glass is half empty ; to the F1 engineer the glass is twice as big as it needs to be

McLaren, Williams and now Ferrari will be using the Idiada Test Track in Barcelona to shake down their cars over 2 days. I am led to belive that Force India are goiing to be shalking down their car at Silverstone using the new International layout tomorrow, but that could be on a shaky peg due to the cold and posible snow in the UK.

The weather will be nippy in Jerez alright.

Minimum of 4 and a max of 15.... I'm not sure that team will be able to get a huge amount of data from the tyres.
In fairness though it's only the new hard tyre that is going to be "new" to the teams, as all the other compounds remain unchanged no?
More could have been done.

Not entirely true as the shoulders of the tires now have a more steep radius rather than '11 specs gradual radius. This gives the tire a little more contact patch which in turn I believe will change the way camber is arranged a bit. I suspect those drivers who enjoy a sharp front end will make better use of these tires.

Silverstone should be dry and sunny tomorrow but it'll be cold - may just get above freezing.

As Scarbs tweeted, Force India may just have their best ever attendance at their launch tomorrow with Ferrari being snowed in. Hope their catering budget covers it, but if there is enough rolls and bacon to keep everyone happy, im sure it will be one hell of a launch. Albeit a cold one for the journos, who will have to have a good coat or jacket on with hat and or scarf.

No 22C and clean MTC and canopes tomorrow. More like cold with propper food.
