Will FIA end up requiring silencers?

F1s are insanely loud.
All racecars are loud but F1s are worse. Or maybe their high pitch makes it less bearable.
I still remember when I first attended an F1 race my young kid excitement quickly went down because of engine noise.

I'm not advocating F1s being as quiet as a road car, just down to tolerable levels.
Maybe turbos are the first step in silencers?

Going to a F1 race i liken to going to a gig. If you arnt expecting the high sound pressure levels you clearly shouldnt be there.

Theres nothing like having your ears blown off from start to end in a 2 hour set with Marshall or Mesa Boogie amps at full bore. F1 is the same, instead of a Marshall at full bore its a Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault or Cosworth that is at full bore.

You wouldnt go up to a guitarist and ask him to dial down the volume mid set, so why ask a F1 driver or team to drive more quietly?

One thing i loved about Barcelona at the weekend was the engine noise was drowned out by the crowd at turn 9 when Alonso came out of turn 7/8 in P1 on lap 1. And thats just like the audience participation at a gig.

F1 is entertainment to some, and some people like me like a bit of noise when being entertained.

Also, when you go to watch a movie in a cinema, you dont want to ask the question of noise when a car chase is going on or when an alien is destroying the planet at the action sequence at the end?

Take the noise away, you take the excitement away for some.

It depends on your personal definition of "tolerable".
To me, it's never been a problem. I like it, I like it much.
You should have heard RB's last year in Monza... the most insane revving thing I've ever heard live (V12's sounded way better to me, but never got one in front, so can't really judge).
Of course, the real problem is the day after, you know, light headache, a costant fizzle in you ears. But that's ok, it's F1!

next year with a turbo we should have a lower pitch to the exhaust note i would have thought. If you are on about hearing damage then it's not the overall volume that is the main problem it's the high pitch notes that cause tinitus

They require silencers on the speedway bikes so who knows...

The turbo engines will run from 10,500 to 12,500 (18% per gear change) which will drastically cut the noise. Also the engines have only 75% of the cylinders, there will be a single exhaust and the turbo will pretty much kill the accoustic peaks.

So, the OP found F1 loud so wants it made less noisy. Hmmm. Can't help but think the answer is for the OP to be required to wear ear defenders of some form. That way he isn't deafened and others can enjoy the noise as they wish.

Typical of modern society; "I don't like it so should changed to suit me alone". Meh!

I go shooting. Some people wear ear defenders (I do too) but some don't. Marvellous thing being individually responsible for our health...

I agree with Just_a_fan. If noise isn't your thing then don't expect a series to cater to your wishes, especially one like F1 where the sound is a key ingredient. I hear electric karting is fun too. (...get it?)

I like to stand behind the top fuels & top alchies when they do a test fire right after the rebuild. You have to hold your ears closed for the nitros. It makes my eyes tear, my nose run, and the smell of burned and unburned fuel, what a rush! Maybe thats what's the matter with me
When I was 16 I used to buy vinyl records that consisted strictly of f1, endurance cars etc sounds. My friends and I would get together and turn up the volume.
I just couln't conceive of of a quiet f1, without that high pitched scream.

I stood a few feet away from a V10 F1 just revving the crap out of it. Best day of my life.
No earplugs, although that might be a smart option if you are going to a race and see cars pass by for 1.5 hours.

That is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard=use the darn earplugs the noise of F1 is 27% of the sport. I am not yelling at you but be real
