Shift Types????

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Shift Types????

Post

They just told a driver,,,I forget which..that he had this engine map and they had selected for him "Shift Type 3"
They have different shift types?
How?
How fast? How HARD? What are these different types of shifts?

Maybe I didn't word that correctly...
How many Shift Maps do they have or are they allowed?
What do those Shift Maps control?

Since the driver controls the start of the shifts, are we not then talking about how the shift lights are programed on the dash/wheel? You can set them any way you want.

Perhaps but I got the impression it changed the actual shift.
Perhaps the shift points much the same a Lewis was told to short shift to spare his engine. It was practice and maybe they wanted low rpm, relatively, and soft shifts to save some component.
I'm pretty sure it was the HRT.

perhaps it has something to do with the moment at which they hear the shift blips in their earpieces?

Yeah - so they change the shift point down by, say... 1000 RPM? So maybe the blinking lights (and the blipping tone) tells the driver to shift at 17k RPM rather than the normal 17.9k.

There are definitely different shift maps, targeted at driveability, durability, performance or fuel economy.

One that all teams have in common is a special shift configuration for wet weather, where the shifting mechanism and clutch will make sure that when the shift is completed, power is gradually released on the wheels. The other way around is also true, as when downshifting for a corner, a wet weather shifting map will make the car less prone to lock the rear wheels.
