Driver matchup: DiResta vs Hulkenburg

Post

Pretty simple idea, who in your opinion is the best driver between these two young guns.

I see big things happening to both drivers in the future, and I rate them very highly indeed and I can see both as future world drivers champions.

Perhaps controversially I think both drivers have more talent than the current world champion, but as yet that is talent unfulfilled mostly due to circumstance, Vettel got to Red Bull, Hulkenburg and DiResta did not despite both having much better pre F1 records.

I think they are both quite good. Difficult to judge, because Hulk did get beaten by Rubens(!) and DIR by Sutil. But they are now 7th in the WCC, and compared to Williams it is the drivers that are making the difference. They just keep on getting the points. If the other driver has a bad day, the other one is always there to pick up the pieces.

Well this is true, but being their first year in F1 I think they can be forgiven somewhat. I know DiResta was performing well against Sutil in his first season until he started racing at tracks he didn't know, and Hulkenburg was starting to pic up the pace with a fantastic pole at the end of his maiden year.

Never take into account rookie years. they are allowed to do bad and learn that year so i think their second year is a much better way to judge a driver.

I have calculated time wise in qualifying and there´s not much between them. (not average gap but instead plus or minus)
In 14 races Hulkenberg is leading with 1 second faster. This is basically nothing.
In comparison with HAM/BUT it´s 5,1s and ALO/MAS it´s 4,5s and MAL/SEN it´s 12 seconds.
Closest guys in Qualifying are VET/WEB with 1 tenth!! over 14 races that´s crazy.

But back to the two above. Two very strong and intelligent drivers. FI must be absolutely delighted to have those two.

Choosing one? Di Resta.. Beat Vettel in F3, adapted to DTM, won the title. Adapted to F1, will in the future be a contender for a title no doubt.
Just need to get into the right team.

Nice information there. I was hoping someone would pull something like that up.

All true about DiResta, but Hulkenburg has an equally strong record although all in open cockpit racing. I've thought Hulkenburg is a bit special ever since Brazil 2010, unfortunately on that day the fairy tale could not be transfer over from quali to race.

Yea it's really impossible to choose between the two.
Give them a good car and they will stay out of trouble and bring in the points.

In my opinion the third strongest driver pairing.

I actually can't think of a better line up in terms of outright talent. More experience is the only think I think these two guys are lacking.

I would probably put the two champs Hamilton and Button higher and Webber Vettel but i guess Webber would be the weaker link in that chain.
But as a team effort he's done very well this year.

Hard to tell – every time you think one of them is getting the upper hand, the other raises their game. Early in the season it looked like DiResta would stomp all over Hulkenburg. Mid season it looked like Hulkenburg was going to walk off with it, and now DiResta stomps all over him again...

Either way, I think these two (and Perez) are easily the two (or three) most tallented (relative) newbies on the grid at the moment.

I prefer Hulkenburg to DiResta. I though he did really well at Williams, and I was REALLY shocked and disappointed when he was dropped for 2011. And although it isn't a track quality I like that while Hulkenburg was dropped, and picked up and spent a year as a 3rd driver etc etc he always had a smile on his face and seemed to be friendly and optimistic.

It pains me to say this as a Scotsman but I would choose The Hulk. I think Paul has done a great job so far in F1 but I view him more as a great teammate like Coultard than a F1 champion. I do hope Paul can prove me wrong in the future, he can be consistent but I don't see the flashes of pure genious that Hulkenburg displays at random moments. If you want a champion then take a gamble and hope that Hulk can start to deliver every race. If you just need constructor cash then Paul is a shoe in.

The last Scottish driver I thought could one day become an F1 legend was McNish, great talent that had the speed and the mindset to make it. I saw him race years before his F1 testing days for the post office  and he was special. A couple of major incidents changed his fortunes but at least we saw what he could achieve with the LeMans series.

I agree with Gatecrasher. Also, apparently, Will Buxton says that the Force India guys don't really like working with him as he's harder to work with than Hulkenberg is

There's demanding, and then there's being an arse. Let's not confuse the two here. It's possible to be demanding without being an arse.
