F1 fuel development questions for Shell's Mike Evans?

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

F1 fuel development questions for Shell's Mike Evans?

Post

Vance and I will be part of a group chatting tomorrow with Shell F1 Fuels Project Leader Mike Evans, who works with Scuderia Ferrari formulating their race fuels. Anyone have any questions they'd like us to pass on?

We're not necessarily as technically oriented as you guys, but we'll try to get you an answer! ;)

What are the possibilities of significantly lifting the fuel's energy content, from typically 46 MJ/kg, within next year's F1 rules?

Great question! I'll see if I can work it in there. It's a 30 minute chat.

I'll seconf X's question. I think it's THE ISSUE for 2014.

Now if we are ever getting a honest answer...

Indeed, in all honesty won't hold my breath, but it will nevertheless be interesting to learn how Shell will spin the issue?

Thanks guys for all your great questions! We have about 30 minutes to share Mike & Formula1Blog with a few others who will also be in the hangout. We'll try to get some questions in!

In case anyone wants to tune in live tomorrow, here's some info on the event from Formula1BlogL http://www.formula1blog.com/formula-1/j ... mber-12th/

Similar to x's question, if it's not to late.

Is it more useful to increase the sheer energy content of the fuel or to use special contents that allow for a faster combustion in the 2014 engine?

The technical regulations (§19) allow paraffins, olefins(max 17%), di-olefins(1%), naphthenes, aromatics(max 40%), oxygenates. Which of them has the highest energy content per mass?

Edit:
Which heating value is used when calculating the thermal efficiency of an engine, the lower or the higher one?

Does the 2014 fuel differ highly from the 2013 one in terms of energy content and ingredients?

When increasing the octane number by maybe 5% and increasing the compression ratio of the engine accordingly, how much more engine power will approximately result from this increase? 1, 5 or more than 5%?

Dear FIA, if you read this, please pm me for a redesign of the Technical Regulations to avoid finger nose shapes for 2016! :-)

Can you ask the gentlemen in question why two threads are necessary for this?

Could you please ask Mike Evans how x-pensive it is to develop the fuel for 2014?

And does it benefit road car fuel development?

Lol, already know the answer to that one.
Grip is a four letter word. All opinions are my own and not those of current or previous employers.

Trying to catch people who don't necessarily crossover between these two forums

Again, thanks for all your excellent questions. I wish i could have asked every one of them. However, there were some technical difficulties getting the show on the road, so we were limited to less than half an hour with Mr. Evans. Rather than try to answer all of your questions here, I'll just give you the link to the video so any of you who are interested can check it out for yourselves.

Arms and legs will most probably not cover it I'm afraid.

Here's a kinda cool new video I just received from Shell & Ferrari. I uploaded to our FB page. In it, Shell's Guy Lovett & Mike Evans, and Ferrari's Luca Marmorini & Mattia Binotto take a look at the new F1 powertain & walk us through some 2014 F1 engine & ERS design considerations brought on by the new regulations.
