Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Aha! You’re only half right on that my friend. Top to bottom actually, with all resultant columns right to left.

OK, yes, you are correct, R to L for when text is vertical. This perception of R to L can change how you "read" pictures, e.g. Hokusai's "Great Wave" (ok, "Under the Wave off Kanagawa" to be more exact). Are the boats running from the wave or heading straight into it ?

Judging by what is discernible of the boat/oarsmen, it appears the boats are heading into the wave. However all this does not alter the fact that Honda have blindly carried over from the early KERS years an excusable mistake made back then. (likely as not influenced by some of the teams adopting centrifuge KERS).
Think torque curves; vertical electric as opposed to ICE and mix it in your mind with the power to weight ratio. There’s two, three tenths begging there. The KERS motor, or call it what you want, really ought be at the rear of the engine, not crippled at the front.

Interesting. First on track engine failure for the season?

Edit: second failure? That was odd, cut out before any sign of smoke and then hit the barrier.

Friday engines certainly. Hopefully they get some information on the cause/s

Tanabe: Towards the end of the session, the ICE on Gasly’s car failed and then Kvyat crashed due to a complete shutdown and with the team, we are now investigating the cause of both these problems. However, they have no effect on the rest of the weekend from a PU point of view, as both of them were running “Friday only” PUs, due to be changed tonight.

The power is now on par with Mercedes in qualifying? Or is it because of altitude?

Mercedes engineers told that they believe that Honda is strong in high altitudes which shows that they have advantages on electrical side.

Altitude. It mitegates performance difference. But Honda is getting there. Hopefully they are now truely close.

No, high altitude performance comes from the ICE alone not the electrical side coz the high altitude has thinner air which favours engines with smaller Turbo (which Honda has).

I'm aware that the teams may use more than 4mj per lap as long as the "empty" and "fully charged" state of the battery are only 4mj apart, but maybe this makes Honda gain a bit of performance on short tracks? Or maybe this makes Ferrari suffer a bit more than everybody else, because their magical boost is from the ERS?

If Max didn't have a small lockup in austin he would have been pole so Honda has power everywhere not just high altitude tracks
