Changing In-Car software from distance

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Changing In-Car software from distance

Post

So today I had a thought about how complicated in-car software is managed in F1. We have heard from the past that certain drivers who had an issue while driving the car, get the word from the team that they are working on that from the pit(wall). So that means they can connect with the car from a distance. But how?

When Hamilton became WDC in Abu Dhabi, the team changed his steering wheel display with a special message.

i'm sure there are rules that prevent the team making changes remotely, but they can tell the driver to make changes on his steering wheel that can reset certain systems, or provide a work-around solution

In the technical regulations.
8.5.2 Pit to car telemetry is prohibited.

And also perhaps:
8.7 Driver radio :
Other than authorised connections to the FIA ECU, any voice radio communication system
between car and pits must be stand-alone and must not transmit or receive other data. All
such communications must be open and accessible to both the FIA and broadcasters.
