Winners' caps (and cowboy hats, fur hats and sombreros...)

Post

So when the Austin GP arrived the Americans brought a quirky little twist to the winners' caps by way of the Stetson. It was fun and kind of cool and after all they're the Americans so we went along with it.
Image
Then the Russians came along and of course anything the Americans can do the Russians can do better, so they introduced the fur caps; a little strange in late Summer but we went along with it as a cultural twist.
Image
(I'd like to thank Lewis Hamilton for handily pointing to the hats in question)

We've now reached Mexico and of course the cap has been replaced with the (rather large) winners' sombrero.
Image

So the question is: Are these cultural novelty hats a good thing or a bad thing? Does it add colour having different hats for different countries' races? (a future Pirelli bowler hat for England perhaps?) or is it becoming a little over the top and races go back to the standard cap, with perhaps only the inaugural race having a custom one?

I think its pretty cool. Being from texas it almost pains me to see the cowboy theme stereotyped but as long as its in good fun why settle for boring.

Im sure drivers get tired of the same hat every race as well.

It's okay imo. It adds the fun part to the sport. Reminding us that winning is fun. Winning shouldn't always mean business.

Now we only need this:

Australian hat will have a dozen corks hanging from it. Will they be allowed to make a pirelli keffiyeh for a bahrain and abu dhabi races. Im sure there would be some good looking hats for China and Japan.

This in China? This Chinese dragon hat covers all three people in the podium at the same time!

I thought it was a bit silly at forst but then I thought: Who the hell decided that a baseball cap is the correct hat for Formula 1? Surely thats the hat for Baseball?

I google Imaga'd "First ever Formula 1 race" and found this picture:

Image

So surely the traditional F1 podium hat is a leather cap/helmet all the drivers are wearing? Either that or there are a lot of Pork Pie hats in the crowd.

As the the British GP how could it be anything other than a flat cap?

Yes we need a Burberry "chav" cap for the UK. Even better than the knotted handkerchief!
