F1 Powertrain

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

I wonder what is the F1 gearbox component looks like.

Is it the same as common car?

pretty much. F1 Transmissions are just optimised for their demands.
They use 8 forward gears and they use a "planetary" differential.

F1 gearboxes are a different beast. They are 8 speed (+ reverse) sequential gearboxes, they are very light, and quite compact.

They don't have a gear stick as you would find in a normal road car, but they change gear using paddles on the rear of the steering wheel (which answers your other thread!) right hand paddle to shift up, left hand paddle to shift down. These paddles control a stepper motor Hydraulic piston that rotates a selector drum to move the selector forks to engage each gear.

Some road cars are fitted with direct shift gearboxes but these dual shaft gearboxes are not possible in F1. F1 gearboxes have to have a single input shaft and a single output shaft.

You can read up more about F1 gearboxes on Scarbs website: http://scarbsf1.com/transmissions.html

Are you sure about the stepper motor? I always thought F1 gearboxes were hydraulically actuated.

They are. I'm sure the Scarbs article he linked mentions it.
“To be able to actually make something is awfully nice”
Bruce McLaren on building his first McLaren racecars, 1970

“I've got to be careful what I say, but possibly to probably Juan would have had a bigger go”
Sir Frank Williams after the 2003 Canadian GP, where Ralf hesitated to pass brother M. Schumacher

My bad. Corrected. That'll learn me to type without properly researching things
