Cutting / Welding 2015 BBS wheels

Post

Hi everyone,

I am new here and thought this would definitely be the place to answer a technical question for me.

I am looking to buy two former F1 wheels and turn them into a Barbecue for friend who is a huge fan.

So i want to cut and weld the wheels etc. However, i read that the wheels contain Magnesium. So given welding and cooking temperatures, do you think this will be risky with Magnesium?

Thanks,

Mark

In all seriousness, my old man used to have a BBQ made from a car wheel. You need a 15" diameter wheel so that it will fit on top of a 44 gallon drum, which raises the height and, with the top removed, also gives something to catch the ash and grease in. An F1 wheel is only 13" diameter and a very expensive one at that, for something that's going to get extremely dirty with oil and charcoal ash.
I think an F1 wheel, or one from a GT sportscar would make a better indoor table, away from fire (hopefully).

Great, thanks for your advice.

Hopefully we can find an alternative for the wheels.

Thanks again

Can you sketch an example of how you want to lay the wheels into the BBQ structure? There's more than one way to skin a cat.
