WRC back in Canada ?

Post

Last year there was serious talk amongst the WRC promoters about bringing a WRC event back in Canada . The organizers are looking for a rally to be held in 100% snow conditions. Presently only the Rally of Sweden has snowy weather. The Monte Carlo Rally has some snow in the French Alps. The area the organizers are looking at is Maniwaki which is situated approx 130 km north of the nations capital Ottawa. One of the problems is there isnt much public interest in this type of motorsport especially during Hockey season. In the years 1977 until 1979 the Criterium Du Quebec or the Rally Of Canada was part of the WRC calendar. The 1977 edition was won by Timo Salonen in a Fiat 131 Abarth. The 1978 edition was won by Walter Rohrl & Markku Alen in the Fiat 131 Abarth. The final edition in 1979 was won by Bjorn Waldegard driving a Ford Escort RS1800.

Old thread but nice to see it bumped. I've been to Maniwaki for the rally 3 times and it is fantastic, the town really gets into it. Biggest problem is they are short on hotels, it's hard to find a room just for the CRC event.

Agreed it is a perfect setting for a WRC event but like you said lacking infrastructure. If the FIA grants the rally people will need to rent cars and book hotels 1h 30 minutes away. Also have to take into account the International media and team personnel who need to be fed and sheltered.
