Alpine A521

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Livery and Reliability very good. Question marks over pace and speed.

Well we knew going in that they were throwing limited resources at 2021.

They are running the shorter roll hoop cover today + the smaller hot air exits at the back of the car

Wow. Comparing these pictures, Ocon looks like he’s sitting a lot higher than Alonso. I wonder what it does to the air coming in from the lower inlet.

He sure does! Wonder how that effects the protection from the halo 😳
Yikes! That's really exposed! They might have to use my invention, the High Halo for Ocon.

Interestingly, Ocon said in his helmet presentation video that "we need no spoilers anymore this year"
And inded, both drivers ditched the helmet rear spoiler https://i.imgur.com/6oLkfVF.jpg

https://twitter.com/AlpineF1Team/status/1367068575203221505

--> this might be a clue: the helmet needs no spoiler because the lower air intake behind the helmet needs/worsks with a different airflow in 2021?

OCO and RIC: different helmet and height -- > different spoilers in 2020

They've tested this special spoiler on the drivers helmet + this winglet in 2018 where this rollhoop design first appeared...
But they didnt keep them

Interesting slotted cape
https://i.imgur.com/yweHBLD.jpg
The cape isnt slotted, thats an optical illusion.

The outer edge of the cape is lower than the 'mainplane' of the cape, it falls off a bit. the white lights above make that transition look like a slot. In addition, there are vertical strakes on the cape as well, they look almost like hooks, they are just flow conditioners, the combination of these plus the angle make it look like a slot.
Remove your shades.
So about those slots...???

And the adding of these new air inlets inside the lower roll hoop duct, which has been remodeled as well IMO, is quite intriguing...
It seems the walls of the lower duct do not diverge/expand anymore.... so it is possible that the lower intake does not serve for CCS cooling anymore (or far less than before) and that it feeds the compressor instead...
EDIT: it still looks too big for the compressor... so I bet it's divided between compressor air supply and cooling...

Hmm nothing has changed from when I said I wait till a few races. Sometimes the CG images usually have parts that are being considered for future races.

What i use to identify the slot is the presence of the little brackets. If it weren't slotted unlikely brackets would be needed there.

You can watch where the mechanics stick the dry ice blowers when they bring the car into the garage.

Man that car looks ugly.... the airbox is out of any proportion. No wonder why nobody wants to get that PU
Because PU is reason for bulkier look....
Exactly...

Mclaren had the exact same engine in 2020 and despite that they had a much thinner rollhoop... (AND more undercut sidepods)

The bodyworks had different widths simply because the positioning of the 'CCS' coolers inside was different.
The Renault had/have a wider radiator placed further forward just above the engine so it must be inserted between the compressor duct (blue) and the engine, and sit in a more flat position (about 30°) and go wide, while the other CCS (except the Mercedes teams) are positioned at 60°-70° further back and can go long and thin...

Do other cars have that part exposed as well?

Edit: My bad, I didn't know these parts were separated for all cars, I always thought they were joined.

I like what they've done there....

The way the exhaust points down will really energize the diffuser air.

Some look very exposed (RB, Alpine, MCL, Ferrari), so some seem to be less exposed...
