Marko also confirmed that Red Bull is in conversation with Honda, who has hinted that it could return to F1 in 2026 after exiting at the end of last year.

The first engine has already run. That means we are completely self-sufficient. (Marco says)

That's interesting. Is it a 'built to plan' under licence Honda engine or their own?

It's a single-cylinder prototype.

It's a single-cylinder prototype.
Their own design? That would be a huge leap for them

What benefits would a single cylinder engine have for advantages?

The single cylinder let's them rapidly iterate through ideas for the combustion process and shape of the combustion chamber. Cheaper as well. Imagine doing up a new V6 every time you change the chamber geometry.... Eventually they will need to move to a V6 prototype.

Makes sense, so you just 'weld' 5 more cylinders onto the engine and you get to the V6. I did just have a google and theres a couple articles about it.

Cosworth made a 20k rpm version single cylinder engine! Crazy!

Yes, eventually they will need the V6, because there is an additional level of complexity that must be developed related to feeding 6 cylinders from 1 turbo (resonance in the airflow), as well as cooling architecture.

Do you fancy to read 1000 forum pages?
Apart from the answers they gave you already, this is covered extensively, in the Honda power unit thread.
This is no bashing, just informing other members that possibly lost it.

No it's not a single cylinder, but full V6 engine. Surprised so many ppl don't know it here already... The news are old already.

“The first single cylinder engine will be imminently running for the 2026 rules. We move into the new facility at the end of May. We’ve attracted some fantastic talent into the group.

“So, we’re pleased with progress.”

Single-cylinder engines are usually early prototypes before the real thing is pursued at full scale.

Horner was not more specific than saying it will run “imminently” but it is understood that dyno running is not meant to take place before July 1, which could be the timeline Red Bull is working towards.
They moved into the facility in May. Reported that a single cylinder would be running no earlier than July 1st, and now they have a V6 2 months later? Impressive if so. However I'm not sure that's the case or atleast if it IS the case, then that V6 engine is likely a very very very pre-production prototype which will be nothing like the engine we see 3 years now.

I think it's far more likely that the "running" engine was the single cylinder concept engine. Words are used ambiguously by Horner and the journos.

Porsche wanted to buy 50% of the team. RB is not for sale.
Thanks. So then, what might this tell us about Honda? They do or do not want to buy a portion of the team. Or want to be an engine supplier.
Honda have said many things at various times

1) We are not interested in 2026 F1: https://www.gpblog.com/en/news/115934/h ... rning.html
2) We will only come back on the condition that we are more than an engine supplier.

along with the following deal breaker: RBPT has it's own engineers and technology. Horner has said the train has left the station. RB are no doubt thankful for Honda but it's just business. It was business when Honda decided to pull the plug, and it's just business if RB don't open the door to being open to Honda's whims and fancies about F1 participation in the long run.
Yes, RB is on the path to becoming something like a Ferrari on a different scale. Able to supply their own engines while building x number of niche consumer vehicles. So then, what part of that would Honda want to affiliated with? Whatever happens, maybe we'll get an entire season with the Suzuka livery.

I was curious what the building looks like, it has been finished indeed.

But a full works return for Honda is now on the cards.

“That is being negotiated,” Marko said. “I will be flying to Tokyo between the Singapore and Suzuka races in early October.”

Well If it is a choice between Porsche or Honda coming into F1 I go for Honda every time.
