Red Bull RB18

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Looks like they moved that reservoir from the splitter area in previous years and to the top of the airbox with another smaller one on the side.

Regarding the instrument in the foreground, its a leica absolute tracker. Used to measure points in space, so probably used for initial setup of suspension and such.

Is it not to locate the position of the hand held scanner in relation to a fixed point on the car?

Don't know how they are using it, but yeah. They'll probably use a passiv target and move it to locations the want current coordinates for or the have multiple fixed targets on the car (stickers) that they can scan. I'm not familiar with the device, it just looks like a totalstation so i looked up what it actually is.

NASCAR has been using fully laser scanning rules checks since 2018. Prior they used a hybrid system fo lasers and body templates.

What did the FIA do previously to make sure the conformed to the box dimmensions?

Redbull has been using that tool for many years though and I'm guessing that it is more for setup reasons. To avoid running strings and such.

I’m talking scanning the whole body so it is know it fits into a template for compliance reasons.

Laser alignment has been around forever it feels like now.

F1 previously used physical 'gauges' drawn along the car to be sure nothing protruded into the 'boxes' and fit into the cutouts in the 'frame'. it was quite erm, old school.

I see both disc AND caliper
Nice detail shot though.

What is going on in the t-tray @rb18? looks like spring/dampener ? or maybe its just an oil-cooler with rod attachment for the t-tray frame...
If you zoom in you will see adjustment collars. It is a spring and damper with height adjustment.
For Sure!!

The images with the caliper dangling around, held by just two connectors, really shows how incredibly light those parts are as they are confident enough to do it without fearing any issues stemming from that.
Judging from the type of connection, thats an hydraulic line. It can probably lift a horse.
