Medals

Post

I cant believe that f1 is being messed with again! What a load of rubbish, this can only go wrong. The headlines say that Massa would have won the 08 championship under the medals scheme. We are only lucky it wasnt in place this year as the championship would have been decided by a marginal stewards descision that we were all very happy didnt affect this years result!
How is this going to help racing for 2 and 3rd places, 4 and 5th, whats the point in racing if you mess up in quali and start 15th, no points for getting anywhere in the top 8. The championship will be over way before the last round for the next couple of years as however gets the 09 car regs will dominate and the racing will be more spread out than the last 5 years.
Quali is also being tampred with again after its finally been got write, (other than carrying race fuel in Q3) with a pointless point awarded for pole or do you get a medal for this too!
FIA, and bernie keep rushing through ill thought out rash, self administered knee jerk reactions to nothing. F1 is a sport and sport isnt always exciting, sometimes its predictable, sometimes erratic, stop changing the rules and let it be!

If Bernies argument for the proposed medals thing is to stimulate racing, it should make some sense to keep the incentives to fight for the lower positions as well, when that can be just as exiting as following a solitary leader.

It is a stupid, stupid idea.
I can only imagine that Bernie has said it to provoke a reaction because this is certainly not a serious proposal!

If things like this continue I hope that the manufacturers do start a new championship of their own as it's beginning to turn into a clown show.

Offering up a simplified (dumbed-down) method of understanding the WDC appeals to new fans or fans who have trouble comprehending the present points system.
This is just part of Bernie's attempt to garner a larger audience.

But before we slam it, give it a chance to work. Who knows, most may like this new system.
Racing should be decided on the track, not the court room.

Like Piquet crashing into the wall just after Alonso had pitted early ?

Then coming on the radio to the pitts with "sorry guys" :^o I bet he was quickly forgiven.

Bernie uses the example of Lewis winning the WDC without winning most of the races. That's funny because the reason for that was Lewis being aggressive and going for the win in Spa when he had no need to and got punished for it.

You think there are people out there who can't do basic maths like adding a few numbers together?

They may as well award gold stars for goals in soccer and then tally up gold stars at the end of the season to decide which team is the best.

So consistancy counts for nothing now? Wasn't it Keke who won a championship in the early 80's while only winning one race? Bernie's new system would negate any chance of that. This is stupid.

I'll admit up front that I do not take Bernie or Max seriously at all, so I am hazy on this: isn't the proposal that "medals" are given only for the first three positions?

Will one of you stats whizzes tell us all how the medal system would have affected the 2008 WDC?

Next year it is not beyond the realm of possibility that only 3 (or 4) teams will win any points (OOPS, medals) at all. Right?

Currently, the teams get money (for example, travel money) based to some extent on total points. How will this change with the medals system? Currently, it is a moral victory for some teams to get into the top 8 - no longer, right? Now, the first eight get some "reward." Next year, it will be the top three and a bunch of point-less losers?

I think the constructor points system stays unchanged...

the math is simple: massa would have won the 2008 championship with one more "gold medal" aka "win" than ham-bone.

and youre right chris, the constructors system remains unchanged.

i second this very very strongly!!!!! this is exactly why the points system works, and its also why i love the points system.

lastly, i only posted here to remind everyone, and to second mx_tifosi, that there is already a thread for this
