KERS charging

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

KERS charging

Post

Apologies if this has been discussed already.

I had the thought a while back that the KERS system could perhaps be used as an aid for braking stability/traction. In a situation where the rear wheels spun due to too much throttle it could perhaps be automatically activated to 'charge' the unit and absorb some of the power from the engine, or activated in pulses during 'over enthusiastic' breaking, ABS style, to try to avoid locking the rear wheels (obviously the standard brakes would still be on, but in theory it would help to modulate the force a bit).

I had a look myself and couldn’t find anything in the regs that would disallow it, I know there are sections on how quickly power can be 'recovered' but if set up correctly a little help is better than no help. The KERS ECU isn’t FIA controlled so there shouldn’t be much problem from that end.

I expect somebody to pull some reg out from somewhere that contradicts this, but I've been thinking about this since KERS was first announced and haven’t yet read anything concrete.

Cheers

Well, correct my if I'm wrong, but I thought that KERS is controlled by SECU. That would make KERS TC impossible.

Yes. All engine-braking and TCS usage is strictly forbidden.

The regs (as far as I can see) dont specify when the units can be charged, nor that the driver must be control of that part, which implies it could be automated. KERS units definately have their own ECU, although that could very well be controlled in turn by the SECU.

Following the good old way things work in F1, since it doesnt say you can't do it, then you can. It wouldnt (officially) be engine-braking or TC, it would just be 'charging the unit when there is spare energy' (as there is under wheelspin etc), which just happens to have some (positive) side effects.

Benetton would have done it

Of course, I could be talking out my ass....

check Scarbs posts on the issue. apparently all the technical directors have received very strong warnings to attempt any such thing.
