Toyota/Glock awesome pitstop

Post

Anybody see Glock's pitstop at China yesterday?

He pitted to replace the nose but I think it must have been close-ish to his scheduled stop.

The team replaced the nose, fueled and tyred him in 10.3 seconds. One mechanic jacked the front of the car from the side under the driver's butt while two removed the nose. Another mechanic waiting with a new nose on a jack slid the new one into place. It was very very slick!

It appears that they've been working on being able to change a nosecone this quickly. It was on lap 24 if you want to check your footage.

I noticed that during the broadcast(hard feat when its 4am...lol), it seems very well drilled and seems cleaner than having an extra mechanics upfront with the nose cone, you just leave it on the front jack.

I'm not sure if the jack they used to fit the nose was the same one they usually use for pitstops. Possibly.

I saw it and i have to say i was VERY impressed by the efficiency of that pitstop. The same procedure took BMW 13.x seconds. 3 more than Toyota, which is a lifetime in F1. Expects the other teams to copy Toyota's frontwing jack.

I too was impressed with Toyota's stop, which brings me to this question. How is the nose assembly attached to the main chassis? Locking pins, spring loaded fastners. I've searched for information or detailed photos but haven't had any luck.

I was amazed by it, it was so slick and only took one man to actually put it on.

I reckon this will be copied very quickly.

Good that you mention this zac510.. I was thinking the same thing.

When the new nose when on it was almost like they didn't even have to secure any clips... or, if they did, they were extremely accessible ones on the side of the car.

Yes it looked like it needed to be unclipped to be taken off but not to be put on, which makes sense.

Seriously close to a <10sec nose change!

not to be argumentative but 3 secs aint that big a deal after you just completed a lap without a front wing. But as we know every sec is precious in F1. maybe those 3 secs is what help him get into the points.

I can see this being a really huge development if they ever limit the number of people that can work on the car.

There was an action where a mechanic on each side of the nose did twist securing bolts/screws at the very end.
Very slick, and well done by Toyota. But isn't this extra bit of kit more expense? It may have been quicker, but it wasn't a cheaper process.
Racing should be decided on the track, not the court room.

Islamatron, I think it's a big deal, because you already lost time, would you want to lose more? NO!

But yeah, I think it was very slick and a streamlined change. I think the jack was specially designed for the wing to rest while mounted. Other teams will copy for sure. This will be one of this season's best little innovations I think.

Still, at 4am when this happened, I was kinda sleepy but remember this bit really well because I was like "wow!"

I don't think it's more expesive Dave. I mean, my mom's similar shopping "cart" is about 5 bucks! It doesn't have to be made of titanium. A few AL tube welded together and that's it. I don't think they should bother with putting it in CAD either. Just get a tape measure, weld a few pipes, mount a couple of wheels and that's it!

I had noted this in the China GP topic too!
The thing which has to be found is: how do they lifted the car without the front wing?
Because they do not have any air jacks like in GT cars.
So, how toyota pulled up the car enough to replace tires and front wing at the same time?

Typically, I think it used to be 4 mechanics lifting the front wheels. But recently they start using side-jack I think from the left side of the car and jacking basically under the driver around the floor splitter area. That way the tirechange can happen concurrently with the front wing change.

On the surface, but don't forget the cost of shipping. Maybe just a few bucks more, but it all adds up.
