Spam via PM

Post

Ive just received a message from a 'member' named profilicus.

Message subject: Forum administration

Code: Select all

Important to read!
A quick google search returned a lot of comlpaints about this bot spamming the same message mainly around the russian web. I removed the site name from the link as it may contain malware.

I've been a member for over 2 years now and never had spam PMs, so I thought I'd report this one. Maybe some protection measures of F1T aren't effective anymore.

I got it to.

I clicked on it for fun, being on the Mac, don't have to worry.

Good thing I did, cuz now I got a great cheap source of counterfeit Viagra and Cialis.

Why we can't report PMs to moderators?

Arrgh. Sorry, guys. We'll see what we can do and report back to you. Damn.

I'm banning profilicus right now, of course.

You can quote the PM and send it to the Moderator group, timbo.

When the PM is an ad about solar powered flashlights? ... and right now, when the guy chooses nicks that blend "prolific" with "profile".

It is possible to stop those bots from registring, you know

At my forum (IPB based) I had this problem. Lots of spam bot registered each day, even though most of them failed to post or send PM. I created a custom profile field mandatory for registring "Enter a random four digit number" (letters won't do). Not a single bot managed to register since then.

I'm not sure if this is possible to setup in phpBB though. If not I'm sure there are other clever solutions.
