F1 engine re-equalisation

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

F1 engine re-equalisation

Post

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/78776

The article says that basically Mercedes may be asked to 'de-tune' their engines so that it is more equal to the others.

To me it seems completely outrageous. Why should they have to de-tune when they have paid their engineers to come up with the supposed best engine in F1.

Everyone else should catch up!

rrrrggg

If this wasnt the FIA I would think this was a joke.

Why not tell Brawn and RedBull to make their cars a little slower so they are equal to the others?

Dont agree with this at all.

Precisely PNSD. I was thinking the whole point of F1 is competition?

F1 is not a spec series!

How do they propose they restrict the better engines? and won’t it be bad PR for those suppliers who’s engines aren’t restricted !

• Rev limit: this will be easy with the SECU, but it will only affect peak power, not drivability.

• Inlet Air restrictors: the most likely solution as it affects the power across the rev band according to Cosworth when they ran the V10 for the extra year. But this will be more work for the teams to engineer into the car.

As usual the FIA has left it up to the teams....how in hell are the teams are going to agree as to how to retard the performance of the top engines(which may include not just the Mercs but Also the Ferraris)... well that may very well be just the FIA's point.

I dont see how they will agree so the engines will probably stay the same.

So the FIA addressed the teams concerns but the teams will have to agree as to how to come to an agreement.

this should be a chance for the engineers to develop with consumption rather than power in mind.

keep the power constant but save on gas.
the saved weight would translate into a great gain in performance, especially with next year's rules.

They could use ballast or reduce the maximum revs from winning pilots.

Following suggestions that there is a differential between the performance of engines used in Formula One, the World Motor Sport Council has decided that should this be the case, and should the teams wish to eliminate this performance differential, they may be allowed to do so by reducing the performance of the more powerful engines. However, no engine upgrades will be allowed," an FIA statement announces.
Excellent move by the FIA

Lift th freeze problem solved. Its pretty clear the last 2 years that this rule is unenforcable.

Then new problem of too much money being spent on already expensive engines... then more manufacturers leave the sport.

To some people money actually matters, but not so on these boards.

The rule is fine, the teams are the problem.... as they should be.

Sorta like KERS and New aero rules every year. As the rules get tighter it gets more and more expenisve to go fast.

What is the point of having different manufactures if all the engines are the same?

And if you think the engine freeze saved any money  They just spent it on Aero instead.

Even if there werent new aero rules every year every team would still build a new chassis and would still start all their calculations from scratch... the constant aero changes dont really ADD to what the teams would be spending for a new car all that much.

KERS was supposed to be paid for with the money saved from the engine freeze... KERS still doesnt cost as much as what FErrari(& probably MErc) is reported to have spent on engine development in 2007 while under a "freeze"

It is the teams that are the problem(as they should be), they will spend to win(as they should), and if they dont win thy will just leave(this is the big problem)

If the engines are the same then why are some teams crying for an upgrade?
