A Thought On Gearboxes & Engines (Rules Related)

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

A Thought On Gearboxes & Engines (Rules Related)

Post

I was thinkint there about gearboxes and the current rule on them. The 4 consecutive rule is good, but id have them simmilar to the current engine rule. Give each driver say 4 or 5 of them for the season, and then any addidional after that its a 5 place grid drop.

But one thing id do with both the current engine and in the change of the gearbox rule to say 5 per season for gearboxes and 8 engines per season is make the teams run them consecutivly. Have no Friday engines/gearboxes.

Make the teams try and manage this simpiler and easier for the lay-man to understand. Friday engines just complicate things in my opinion. However, if there is a crash in say Quali, simmilar to what Sutil had at Silverstone this year and the car needs a re-build with engine and gearbox allow a re-use of the previous engine and gearbox only if they want to reuse a previous powertrain, or allow them to start with a new engine and gearbox.

What opinions are there out there on the Engine & Gearbox rules with changes that could be made???

I like the 8 engine rule as it is, I like them being able to use older unit for Friday and then a fresh lump for the race... to make it easier for you to track the miles all they would have to do include the engine # for the Friday sessions.

With 19 races next year I think they should bump it up to 9 engines(0r 10), it might have too much effect on the championship this year(or maybe not), but I dont think that it should be so marginal that reliablity alone could decide the WDC or WCC.

6 gearboxes for the whole season, change em whenever you like... make it more like the engine rule.

And let the teams change gear ratios during the weakend again, that is a silly restriction.

Thats the thing with the gearbox rule id propose, allow the teams to tave each with a diffrent ratio, say a long ratio gearbox for tracks like Spa and Monza, but a short ratio for Monaco and Hungaroring.

The thing that made me thing about this is Rubens crash in Quali this weekend at Singapore. If they had a gearbox that could be whiped out that was used he and Brawn wouldnt get the grid drop.

And it would make shure the championship was credible, and better for the sport i think.

well as it stands now if you drop an engine duing qual(or have to change after qual) you still get a 10 spot grid penalty.
