Hhhhmmm..... the "cars" move around the track at a constant speed (I guess calculated from each driver's specific lap times), so its not really that great....

I think you will find that that is not true. The rain races are particularly telling. Go to replays and punch in Brazil 2008 Run the last lap at a factor of one. You will see the closing speed of Hamilton on Glock. It shows him passing at the precise spot on the track that it happened. The default setting is set at a factor of X4. At that speed it appears to not really show the deviations over the course of a lap. Slow it down to a factor of X1 and you will see the real time progress of cars
The time in the pits appears to be misleading because the cars never actually stop!
Enjoy!

Edit: Or I could be completely wrong in this matter

So.... are you saying that all the cars start on the start-finish line? Or that they all go through corner 1 at the same time on the first lap???

Its kind of fun to watch, but not much more useful than that...

....unless I'm wrong?! :?

Good point about all starting at the s/f line!!
Its clear that they do not got through turn one at the same time. However they are bunched up quite closely.
I don't know what software they're using. You noticed that the dots start blinkind precisely when the cross the start finish line, on their in lap. If you look closely enough you will se s dnf disapear mid-lap suggesting that the program that is used does not only relate info from the s/f line!

Or I don't know WTF I'm talking about!

It is just a graphical illustration of the official lap times published in the FIA media centre after the races. It's only really interesting to watch for races that have the drivers on quite different strategies. For normal, boring races of the refuel-era it's just as boring as the race itself. ;)

Yes, it is only considering lap times and interpolating from there. Hamilton passes Glock at the right corner in brazil just by chance. Try to find any first lap passing.
It does look cool, but it has no info that isn't in the lap times.
