Image
we can see that there is a joint on the jack

They call it the Swivel Jack on the BBC broadcast.

Since MGP have the fastest pit stop so far, I guess it helps.

Also, they do lower the jack, just not by raising the handle again. There's a catch in the handle that drops the jack down even with the handle pressed down. (I know at least one other team has a similar device, but without the swivel (I forgot which team exactly)).

From what I can remember, Mercedes made a 3.5 second stop on Rosberg last sunday. Dont remember Ferrari, but Renault's fastest was 4.7 seconds.

So that is one third faster.
Still the fastest tire only pitstop in 1994 was supposedly 3.2 by Benetton, so it can be done faster.
The only way to close a stupid question is to give a smart answer

Ferrari's fastest if I remember correctly was a 4.4 or 4.5.

Yeah, Steve Matchett has mentioned in his books and on the SpeedTV broadcasts that they have the record but he says it was 2.9 seconds. He gets really excited about the fast stops but has said he secretly hopes that they never beat their record.

Mclaren did a 3.5 second pitstop for Hamilton in the Malaysian Grand Prix. I remember seeing it illuminated in green meaning that it was the fastest pit stop upto date. Everyone then forgot about it as Lewis came out into a fight with Button at the first corner
“On the days when Hamilton’s insane alliance of guts, skill and derring-do appear capable of delivering the world it is easy to forget he is only 25, an age when it is all too common for boys to believe themselves men.”

I´d think the next step is to lift the car entirely from the back of the car.

with Weight distribution very much going to the rear you would need a telescoping forward and upward mechanism to reach under the car .. something like a triangle really with a point reaching under the splitter and then lifting the car ...
with this approach you would not have an obstacle in front of the car possibly delaying the car to be released.

The answer really is built-in air jacks like much of the rest of motorsport use. Presumably these are banned (or are seen as too heavy etc.).

For the "pick it up from the rear" system, a pair of tines that extend under the car and pick up on the step plane would work. If you grabbed the top of the rear wing support post too then you'd be able to lever the whole thing up quite easily.

Wouldn't be any quicker than the current 4 second stops though because the pick up would probably be quite tricky to do quickly.

Sometimes the current simple ways really are the best...

If active suspension was allowed, you could have the car sit down on its belly and lift the wheels up off the floor. Now that would be funny to see!
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Of course ,you need a fool proof system and one that is really quick. sub 3 seconds for the stop is quite a task and every tenth you can gain with the lift is safety for the wheels to be securely fitted to the car...

I do believe that the 1993 Lotus did exactly that!
