If you were to start your own F1 team....

Post

Which people would you hire in the key roles. The roles I am looking at are:

Technical director
Chief Designer
Chief Aerodynamicist
Drivers
Engine supplier

Also, they should be realistic (i.e. the staff should be available and not at another F1 team)

Here's a few names to get you started:
Technial staff: John Barnard, Gary Anderson, André de Cortanze, Pat Symonds (if the team was entering in 2013), Alan Jenkins, Tim Holloway, Gustav Brunner, Egbhal Hamidy, Frank Dernie, Henri Durand, Leo Ress, Mike Coughlan

Drivers: Hulkenberg, Heidfeld, Pafett, Di Resta, Klien, Fisichella, Gene, Coulthard, Wurz, Villeneuve

You're more than free to pick those drivers. I only listed the ones I did as examples. It was by no means intended to be a comprehensive list, though i can't tell if you're sarcastically clapping at me or being genuine?!

No I really like that idea. Though from now on I'll just have a read here because of not knowing who would be the best technical staff.

Well, me starting an F1 team is such an impossible thing that I'll go wild about it. Lets say, that I've got unlimited money and that I'm able to convince any given person, that my team would be the best environment for them to work.

So my dream team is:

Technical director: Ross Brawn and me as his apprentice ;)
Chief Designer: Rory Byrne (I'll force him out of his retirement!)
Chief Aerodynamicist: Adrian Newey
Drivers: Robert Kubica and Heikki Kovalainen/Timo Glock
Engine supplier: I don't care, really. I'll be starting my team from 2013, so I can't predict which engine + KERS combination will be the best.

Jimmy Johnson & Kyle Busch.

I don't know enough key people to fill out everything, but I do know for sure Gordon Murray is wasted building city cars. He'd be the first person I'd call. I'd write him a blank cheque and I'm sure he'd be able to help me figure out the rest.

I think Räikkönen and Heidfeld would make a good team. If Räikkönen can't be arsed I bet Webber would jump at the chance to leave Red Bull and take #1 seat if I could convince him we'd be completive. His contract would state he wouldn't be allowed within 50 yards of a mountain bike, though. It's also a shame Takuma Sato is so friggin' apt to crash, because I really miss him. Maybe he can test or drive the third car if that ever comes back.

Porsche engines and KERS would be nice. It's a shame that politics have kept them out of the sport so long. The 2013 formula seems very suitable to the brand.

If Porsche was on board all I'd be based in Stuttgart, but would like to be registered as a Canadian team. Call it Acadian Racing. Get Bombardier and Research In Motion provide sponsorship and technology.

I'd lobby the --- out of Bernie to have a street race in Halifax up and down Citadel Hill and along the waterfront. Could even build a new track in the Cobequid mountains, about 1.5 hours drive north. Very hilly, all forest, perfect GP country. Like Spa it has its own crazy micro climate. Forecasting weather there is pointless. But no hotels or clubs for Bernie. Maybe he could helicopter in from downtown. Call it the Atlantic Grand Prix. Maybe rotate it year to year with one of Lisbon or New York or Boston or Miami or Buenos Aires or Casablanca.

Could have one called the Pacific Grand Prix, too, to balance it out. Alternate between Tokyo or San Francisco or Vancouver or Hawaii or Auckland or Manila.

Using people who could realistically be enticed to a brand new team:

Key tech staff: Mike Gascoyne and Pascal Vasselon
Drivers: Timo Glock and Nick Heidfeld
Engine: Renault
Other tech components: Red Bull

all these are available?
so first you need a very substantial budget ...not the sort of Mercedes numbers...and then poach away all these ..

Chief Barista: Flavio Briatore
Strategy: Domenicali / Dyer
Driver 1: Hamilton or Alonso
Driver 2: Nelson Piquet
Spokesman: Flav

All other aspects (design, manufacture, testing) will be taken care of by myself. Design will be most likey using a cracked copy of Catia or NX (depending on what I can get hold of). Anyone interested, I am willing to pay minimum wage. Name your position.

I'd run the whole thing as a PR exercise, hell with winning. Like Jordan used to be, only even more drunken and outrageous.

Have Raikkonnen as lead driver, he'd totally be up for a joke entry. Let him race as hung over as he likes, the only condition being that he makes it spectacular to get as much TV time as possible. Maybe Kobibashy as well, he gets the idea I think.

Go the whole way with the James Hunt fantasy- have T shirts that say 'curry, breakfast of champions'. Wander up and down the grid (prerace) with a beer in one hand and a fag in the other. Force anyone who wants to interview any member of my team to do a shot or something obscene beforehand. Have the best rock & roll guests, eg Rolling Stones, Spinal Tap etc. Make sure the media get those photos of naked midnight pitstop practice, and so on and so forth.

You could sell so much brilliant advertising space this way. And the press would absolutely love it.

Then very obviously have a lot more fun than all the other teams, so that their staff want to come to mine...
