FIA publish today's communication with FOTA

In a last minute attempt to resolve the ongoing row between FOTA and the FIA, the Formula One teams sent a letter to the governing body, explaining once again their position. As some of it already leaked, the organisation has decided to publish everything publicly.

In its own letter, FOTA presses that it feels there is a possible solution if the FIA is willing to accept an unpartial monitoring team that will continuously check the teams' budgets. In the same breath, the teams agree with the FIA that a single rule system should be put in place and the two tier system must be ditched.

Recent discussions and analysis have however shown that Cosworth's engine to be used by several teams in 2010 may not be up to par with the others, and as a result may be given a higher rev limit to equalise their performances.

In a response today, Max Mosley that FOTA's ICA proposals would need more discussion and thought as it requires a change of the FIA statutes. Hence, in the name of the FIA he suggest to extend the Concorde agreement of 1998 as that would need no discussion.

Additionally, the main problem is still that there is no clear figure of how much a team will be allowed to spend for its racing activities. Such number is vital for the FIA and an absolute must if the FOTA teams are willing to come to an agreement.

Mosley however added that the single regulation set is no problem and that it has already been agreed.

Then, to conclude his response, the FIA president wrote "We therefore suggest that you agree with the proposed 2010 regulations as we agreed with you last year. If necessary these can be revised in due course."

"We will shortly send each team a letter for signature, which, when signed back, will make the above proposals legally binding and will make the entry unconditional."

To clarify the picture, the FIA also released a letter to the teams dating back on January 11, 2008 which recalls the teams of their agreement with the proposed budget cap. Its last lines are: "In the light of the active and enthusiastic participation of all teams except Ferrari in
drafting the original cost cap rules, it is difficult to understand the objections to the
cost cap which are now being raised."
