Kevin Magnussen topped the timesheets on the first day of the young driver test at Silverstone. Driving a McLaren MP4-28, he posted a 1m33.602s in the final half hour of the session thanks to using medium tyres.

The first of the regular race drivers to run this test was Paul Di Resta who got into the Force India VJM06 after lunch and immediately improved the time of James Calado who ran the same car before noon.

Third fastest of the day was da Costa in the Red Bull. He was consistently in the upper region of the timesheet throughout the day.

There were no real surprises during the day with tyres performing reliably. One strange thing to note however is the relative lack of pace from Marussia. Both Ellinas and Chilton proved to be more than 3 seconds off the pace and more than a full second behind Caterham's Alexander Rossi. Chilton notably had a KERS issue on his car and was only able to run in the final hour of the afternoon.
