Special day for Fisico

Giancarlo Fisichella marked a milestone in his Formula 1 career today. While the Italian was beginning his 2006 campaign with a competitive-looking performance from his R26 in Bahrain, he also took a few moments to reflect on a moment that occurred 10 years ago, on 10 March 1996. The day marked his first start in Formula 1, with Minardi.

He started that race from P16 on the grid in his Minardi Ford. He was team-mate to the Portuguese driver Pedro Lamy at the time. Unfortunately, Fisico retired on lap 32 of 58 owing to a clutch problem, while he was running thirteenth.

Today, the Italian boasts a discreetly impressive CV: 2 wins, 13 podiums, 2 poles and 5 front row starts. He has started 159 Grands Prix, scored 174 points, completed more than 37,000 km in race conditions and completed 152 laps in the lead.

“It’s nice to look back ten years to my first Grand Prix,” explained Giancarlo Fisichella. “At the time, I was happy just to be on the grid. Now, I am aiming for the title. I have come a long way. I don’t think I have changed too much. I’m just a bit older – an even quicker than before!”
