FIA supports Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies with 2 million euros

FIA President Jean Todt delivered a cheque for almost 2 million euros to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to support the humanitarian organization’s global COVID-19 response.

The FIA and the RM Sotheby's joined forces in June in order to raise money to support the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The two parties arranged a charity auction that took place from 15 to 22 June under the banner #RaceAgainstCovid. The auction was successful after it raised one million euros in sales of memorabilia from famous motor sports drivers. The governing body made a donation of one million euros to the charity auction.

On Thursday, FIA President Jean Todt delivered a cheque to Jagan Chapagain who its the Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The Frenchman was buoyed by the success of the charity auction that saw the FIA make a positive contribution to the difficulties presented by the coronavirus pandemic.

“I am delighted to give a cheque for almost 2 million euros raised by the #RaceAgainstCovid online charity auction organised by the FIA and RM Sothebys and the support of the FIA Foundation to benefit the IFRC’s global COVID19 response: it is a substantial achievement.

„Thanks to all those who made it possible. In these difficult times, health, mobility and sport must walk together. We join forces in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and our FIA Sport and Mobility Clubs’ network will play an important role in this collective effort.”

One of the top sales was the McLaren MP4-24 show car, donated by McLaren, which was used to promote the constructor's 2009 season car. The Woking-based team’s car was purchased by £66,000.00.

Among the top ten were a suit worn by two-time race winner Charles Leclerc, at the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix weekend in Spa-Francorchamps, donated by Scuderia Ferrari; a Lamborghini Huracán Performante Development Model, 2016 donated by Lamborghini; Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes-AMG signed racing suit, gloves, and Boots and Max Verstappen’s signed racing suit with boots and rear wing endplate.
