Leclerc reveals what he wants to "prove on multiple track layouts" after his brilliant win in Silverstone

Charles Leclerc finally returned to the top step of the podium after a 624-day wait, producing a commanding drive to win the British Grand Prix and secure his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

It was a performance that not only underlined Ferrari's recent progress but also marked an important personal milestone for the Monegasque after a difficult run of races.

Leclerc made the perfect getaway from the front row, sweeping past polesitter Kimi Antonelli into the opening corners and immediately taking control of the race. From there, he dictated the pace through the opening stint, carefully managing his tyres while building an advantage over the Mercedes driver.

The only moment his victory looked under threat came after the pit stop cycle. Antonelli briefly inherited the lead before making his own stop, and once the Mercedes emerged on fresher tyres, the gap began to shrink rapidly.

At one stage, Leclerc's advantage had fallen to just 3.7 seconds, but Antonelli's charge was halted by problems with his wheel shield, allowing the Ferrari driver to re-establish a comfortable margin and cruise to an emotional victory.

Behind him, Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton endured a more complicated afternoon. Running second in the early stages, the seven-time world champion was handed a time penalty for an incorrect starting procedure.

Serving the penalty during his first pit stop dropped him down the order, forcing him into a recovery drive. Hamilton fought back impressively, overtaking Max Verstappen to reclaim second place, but Ferrari elected to pit him under a late Safety Car, leaving him to finish third. After the race, Hamilton was also investigated for a yellow flag infringement, ultimately receiving a reprimand.

For Leclerc, however, the victory represented far more than just 25 championship points. "It means a lot," he said after climbing from the car.

"It means a lot because when things get tough, and that's literally the situation I've been in the last few races, obviously there's a lot of negativity around me in general, with narratives being created, and it's never a nice environment to work in.

"But to keep our head down and to keep working very hard and get the result that we got today, I'm super proud of the whole team that have been pushing me and helping me to find that feeling again with the car.

"As I said, it's only a first step and I've got to prove that on multiple track layouts. But on such a track where confidence is key, I wouldn't have been able to do that without the feeling, and so that's really good."

The victory also came at a circuit that held painful memories for Leclerc, who looked set to win at Silverstone in 2022 before seeing the result slip away.

Asked whether this success made up for that disappointment, he admitted: "Yeah, I didn't really think about that when I was in the car, but yeah, I don't know if it made up for it, but yeah, it feels very good."

Reflecting on how he built the victory, Leclerc pointed to the strong start after Ferrari had identified launch performance as a weakness following Saturday's Sprint.

"We had a very strong start, which wasn't a given because yesterday the start was very poor. So that was a point of focus.

"After that, I just tried to manage my tyres, focus on the feeling I had with the car from qualifying. I knew what to do inside the car, I knew what to change in terms of tools that I have on my steering wheel.

"I just felt very comfortable in the car, especially in the first stint. Then I understood that the win was a possibility. It was going to be tricky with Kimi at the end, so we've been a little bit lucky on that, but we also need that sometimes."

Ferrari's victory means the Scuderia has now won two of the last three Grands Prix, prompting questions over whether they have now emerged as consistent challengers to Mercedes.

Leclerc, though, remained cautious despite the breakthrough weekend. "I think it's too early to say," he explained.

"I think this weekend was a particularly big surprise for the whole team. Not the win today, just the overall performance. We were a lot faster than what we thought, and I think as much as we need to analyse when things are going a lot worse than expected, we also need to analyse when things go a lot better than expected.

"Coming into the weekend, I remember the meetings that we've done on Thursday and we kind of thought we would be six tenths, five tenths off, minimum. And we were much better than that, and we actually won today. So yeah, it's a very special feeling."
