Stand united - Lainé (Renault)

The ING Renault Formula One Team's Viry-Châtillon Deputy Managing Director, André Lainé, talks about the team’s start to the season. So far, the team is fourth in the 2007 Formula One Constructor's Championship.

André, how do you feel about the ING Renault F1 Team’s start to the season?

"I wouldn’t surprise anybody by saying that our level of performance is disappointing and we all find it difficult to understand how, after being world champions twice, we can be so far off our rivals’ performance. However, this being said I find that the way the team’s reacted to this situation is exemplary. First of all we’ve tried to find out where the problem lies and then with rigour and without panic, apply the most effective solution."

How can the engineering squad help the chassis team?

"We can help on three levels. First by being united: we win together; we lose together. So we emphasize unity. Then we must provide exemplary service. The V8 shouldn’t be a source of problems in either testing or the race so that the chassis team can concentrate on its programme. And finally, even if the regulations limit engine development, there are still areas where we can gain performance and we’re working on them."

Finally, what do you think of Monaco qualifying?

"The place on the second row’s encouraging. Giancarlo put in a fantastic lap and thanks to him we’re starting in front of the 2 BMWs. This result is good for morale. The whole team’s working flat out and results like this are little rewards. But you don’t score points on Saturday..."
