Alonso smashes in tunnel

By on

In an attempt to pass Ralf Schumacher, who was already a lap down on Fernando, the young Spaniard decided he had been help up enough by Ralf, and went for the outside through the tunnel. The incident resulted in the end of Fernando, who was lying second.

When the race developed towards the first stop of Michael Schumacher, the German increased his pace and forced both leading Renaults to up their speed as a reaction.

After the stops, it was clear that both Renaults were again in a better shape while the differences however remained small. The main problem as ever at Monaco was the traffic.

When Alonso had to pass Ralf, he seemed not happy with how fast the German went aside. Therefore, as Michael Schumacher wasn't far behind, Alonso had to pass the Williams, and went for the outside in the tunnel. What seemed to be a relatively easy job turned out in a heavy shunt, and the end of the race for Fernando.

Both men were side by side in the tunnel, but it seemed that Ralf should have held back on the throttle more at that time, since he was anyway not defending any position at that time.

Alonso on the other hand lost grip on the dirty side of the track, and hit the wall. The young Spaniard left his car unhurt, but was visibly very very angry at Ralf.
