Turnaround in start procedure

By on

There seem to be really strange things happening in Formula One lately. At first the cancellation of the newly planned qualifying system supported by Bernie Ecclestone, and now a change in the starting procedure in case a car stalls on the grid. When such happens, the start will not be cancelled anymore.

Strangely enough, this should hinder the 'show' less.

Currently, when a car has problems on the grid, a driver waves his arms, and the marshall responsible for that car waves a yellow flag. The starting procedure is then cancelled and restarted again after about 5 minutes, with again a new formation lap.

An official FIA statement now says: "The start of a race is potentially the most dangerous moment and is therefore something to be avoided if a safety car deployment can manage the situation safely and effectively"

So from now on, a race start will go on as planned, only will it happen behind a safety car. Driver will therefore not be allowed overtaking as long as the SC is out. This will give time to remove the stalled car from the grid before the SC leaves the circuit.

The idea of increasing safety in Formula One appears to be the opposite of what is happening at the moment. Imagine you are on the grid and your car stalls. Now you can only hope everyone has seen you are not moving and cross your fingers no other driver hits you from behind...
