Montoya wins Daytona 24 hours

By on

Former Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya has won the Daytona 24 hours race for the second consecutive time. He was teamed up by Franchetti, Pruett and Rojas. Montoya already proved fastest in the free practice sessions.

The race proved to be very eventul and could go any way until late in the night. A record 24 race breakups and a total of 100 laps behind the safety car allowed for 53 leader changes between 15 teams.

However during the morning several cars proved they could not hold on for 24 hours and one by one they had to give up their hopes for victory. The Ganassi leaders eventually held a comfortable lead. Johnson, Fogarty, Gurney and Vasser finished second in their Pontiac Riley, at two laps of the winners, while Busch, Briscoe and Castroneves were 3rd and a further 4 laps down in the second Pontiac Riley.
